Chapter 14
Ding Sheng still used wind magic to cushion his fall just before hitting the ground, so he only needed a few days of rest in the palace to recover.
Dishang Huai came to visit him in the palace.
Ever since the incident at the birthday party, no one in the princess' palace dared to impede his visits.
Dishang Huai sat by Kris' bedside, eyes downcast, and said softly, "I know everything now. I understand why you wanted to break off the engagement before."
Ding Sheng completely froze at his words. He had absolutely no doubts about Dishang Huai's words; he was the protagonist after all. Even though it was still early in the story and his powers were limited, pulling a couple of cheat abilities to eavesdrop on the Olay Empire's palace would've been a piece of cake for him.
Ding Sheng fluttered his large amethyst-like eyes at Dishang Huai.
Dishang Huai raised his hand to cover Ding Sheng's eyes and calmly asked him, "Why did Your Highness change your mind and decide not to break off the engagement?"
Because I am afraid of the cold.
Unable to see his surroundings, Ding Sheng thought for a moment and answered sulkily, in accordance with a normal person's thought process, "Because I thought it through and realised that gender isn't really an issue."
He heard Dishang Huai's low chuckle.
Then the hand was withdrawn, and light returned to his vision.
For the first time, Dishang Huai took the initiative to hug him. "So, from now on, don't use that reason to reject me, because I don't care either."
Ding Sheng sat there, stunned, allowing himself to be hugged, not quite processing what had just happened.
He vaguely felt that ever since he jumped off the balcony, the protagonist had become bolder around him. Could it be that because Dishang Huai realised he was a guy, so he thought it didn't matter if he was more touchy-feely with him?
Ding Sheng felt this idea made a lot of sense.
#On the unyielding spirit of the Ah Q mentality[1]#
1. "阿Q" is a character written by a renowned Chinese author, Lu Xun (鲁迅). The character is written as someone who is a small figure in society, very poor, with poor upbringing and education, but has a big ego. Every time something unfortunate happens, he finds some seemingly plausible reasons to comfort himself. So the Ah Q mentality is often used to describe people who are self-delusional. And in this case, it's Ding Sheng not accepting the real reason and trying to lie to himself ꉂ (´∀`)↩
