ARBE Chapter 13

Chapter 12

As Kris' character was wilful and self-centred, Ding Sheng decided to be wilful to the end.

A month later, it was Kris' eighteenth birthday, and the royal family threw a grand banquet.

The Emperor and Empress did not like their son's engagement to Dishang Huai, and they were equally displeased with the noble heirs and foreign dignitaries who kept hanging around and fawning over their son. It was only then that they realised the sinister intentions of the liches: raising a prince as a princess until twenty was bound to instil traits beyond their control.

For instance, their son stubbornly falling in love with a man.

Before the banquet began, in the small hall where the princess was resting, Kris had another argument with the Emperor and Empress.

The cause of it was that the Emperor thought that Kris should dance the opening waltz with his divine beast brother, Stuart, and then spend time socialising with the noble ladies and princesses attending the banquet. He wanted Kris to leverage his current status to quickly choose a virtuous future empress and marry upon reverting to his true identity at twenty.

Kris, however, insisted on being with Dishang Huai and doing the opening dance with him.

The Emperor: "Never in the history of the Olay Empire has a man been allowed to take the seat as Empress-Consort!"
Ding Sheng: "It's okay, I'll marry him!"

The Emperor got even angrier and pulled out his magic sceptre to duel with Kris.

Ding Sheng very intentionally moved the location of their argument to the balcony of the small hall as they fought. Most of the aristocratic ladies and gentlemen were either trained in magic or martial arts skills, hence they had enhanced senses and physical abilities that far surpassed the layman, allowing them to vaguely hear their princess' voice.

They heard her say, "Stop forcing me! I will never break off the engagement. I only want Dishang Huai."

Someone exclaimed from below, and the crowd looked up to see that their empire's rose, their crystal princess was, gracefully falling from the balcony like a feathered butterfly!

The citizens of the Olay Empire revered the power of the sky; as such, all their buildings were built to be as tall as possible, reaching into the clouds. The balcony where the princess was nearly a hundred metres from the ground. Her white gown fluttered with the wind as she descended, about to plummet.

Despite being a wind mage, Her Highness didn't use any magic at all.

The crowd was horrified, and they all rushed to the scene.

To everyone's surprise, the first to reach her and catch the princess with both arms was the incompetent Dishang Huai, the one known to be trash.

They all saw the princess struggle to lift her head from the young man's arms, her face white as a sheet as she whispered, "If I can't marry you, I'd rather die." Then, as if she could no longer hold on, she quietly closed her beautiful violet eyes.

Everyone was silent, none of them expected that the princess, who had always been proud and capricious, would actually use her life to make her stance.

Dishang Huai's movements were light as he gently hugged him, pressing his face against his cheek and whispered, "I know."

*********

From then on, no one in the Olay Empire dared to force the princess to break off her engagement.
