Chapter 10 Loop 3-3
——So this is what happens in the end.
I let out a curse as my brother carried me with one hand.
「You don’t believe your own sister’s words, do you, Brother Tris?」
「If you believe in everything an idiot says, you’ll become an idiot
yourself.」
「When I die, you’re going to be the first one I curse.」
「Oh, bring it on! I deflect the curse right back at you.」
This muscle for brains…
In the end, my brother carried me to the master bedroom, just as he did in
the first loop.
「Come on now, what is it? Whether you want it or not, you should have a
proper talk with the groom; the two of you probably didn’t even have the
time to talk during the whole wedding ceremony.」
「Hmph, if I even have time to talk.」
On the brink of despair, I retorted back at my insensitive brother.
I also kicked his back with all my might but the blow simply bounced off
his thick muscles——feels like my kick didn’t do anything to him at all.
「We’ve arrived.」
Ines stopped in front of that same door——those heavy wooden doors.
I lost my life behind those doors in the first loop, and now, for
the third time, I am close to death once again.
Even though I had my brother with me, I still couldn’t help but tremble in
fear.
「B-Brother, I’m really scared. I won’t talk about taking revenge anymore,
please just take me home.」
「Huh? Don’t want to.」
My desperate pleas were dismissed by my brother without a second thought.
…However.
He didn’t put me down; he knocked on the door after carefully observing it
for a moment.
「Bridegroom, it’s me, Hartris Baltic. I have something to discuss with
you about this (my) idiot (sister). May I come in?」
How rude of him to read the word sister as idiot.
I’m not[1]…
This was a rather unexpected turn of events. I thought my brother came
this far just to throw me into the master bedroom, but it seems like he
plans on going inside to have a talk with the Duke.
With Brother Tris here, even the Duke is the culprit, at least I won’t
have to worry about being attacked out of the blue.
「No answer.」
「His Grace may have already gone to sleep.」
Was a reason Ines offered, but my indelicate older brother knocked on the
door even harder.
As I had expected, there was still no answer.
「Strange.」
Brother Tris stared at the door as he mumbled under his breath.
Then, he suddenly opened the door.
「Ah! You can’t go inside without permission——」
Ines hurriedly tried to stop him but there was no way a petite girl like
her could hold him back. My brother walked into the room with me still in
his arms.
Same as before, the room was pitch black. There was no light, just the
same eerie moonlight that dimly illuminated the surroundings.
There didn’t seem to be any sign of anyone in the room, however, that
carelessness because I thought that there was no one here was the reason I
was stabbed.
「There may be assassins lurking in the darkness! Be careful!」
「There isn’t even any sign of human presence. Just what are you trying to
fight against?」
My brother easily let down his guard and set me down on the floor.
My opinion was not taken into account at all. It all feels a little
futile.
He said there were no enemies around, but I still didn’t feel safe so I
quietly clung onto my brother’s back.
「There’s no one here. The bridegroom probably went away somewhere because
you were too late.」
「He went away somewhere you say… but this is his room, in the first
place, isn’t it?」
「This is not our shabby house; with a castle this big, I’m sure there are
many other private rooms for the Duke.」
I guess that’s true.
But what does it mean that the main suspect is not in his room? Why was
this different from the previous loops? In the first loop, there was
already someone waiting for me in the room and I was attacked.
(Maybe there’s some secret passage or hidden room?)
When that thought flashed across my mind, I timidly knocked on the walls
but I didn’t get any sound confirming my suspicions. I also looked
under the bed, but there was still no sign of anyone.
「…Eh?」
「Are you happy now?」
A very audible sigh escaped from my brother's bulky body.
It's not supposed to be like this. However, there was no one in the room
and no place for anyone to hide.
In the first loop, I was thrown into this room alone and stabbed to death
by a man clad in black. In the second loop, I didn’t enter the master
bedroom but was killed in my bedroom after inhaling something like poison
gas.
I didn’t go to the master bedroom in the second loop so I thought that the
culprit somehow managed to get to my room ahead of me and poisoned me. But
what about this time? Why wasn’t the criminal hiding in the room waiting
to ambush me? What's the difference between this time and the first time?
「Hey, I’m leaving soon; I’ve got to go find the bridegroom.」
「Eh, I think it’s fine even if you don’t look for him.」
Why should we go out of our way to ascertain the whereabouts of the Duke
when I can avoid dying on my wedding night?
Him not being in the room could be interpreted as the Duke not being in
the mood. Moreover, the man is the prime suspect. I don’t know why he
isn’t in the room this time but if things can be resolved without seeing
him then it’s better to just leave it be.
「Didn’t I already tell you? No matter what, you should at least have a
talk with the bridegroom.」
「Brother Tris, why are you so determined to bring me and the Duke
together?」
So far, my brother has carried me to the master bedroom twice when he’s
someone who hates trouble and doesn’t like poking his nose into other
people’s problems.
(From his point of view) marital disputes are the last thing he wants to
be involved in.
Surprisingly, he seemed a little upset by my question.
「That’s because… Father asked me to keep an eye on you and our older
brothers aren’t here either.」
It’s very suspicious——the way he answered while squirming with those large
muscles of his.
I was about to open my mouth to press him with further questions when——
「Get down!」
My brother yelled and pushed me away.
「Brother!? What are y——」
I was about to complain when I saw a sinister black shadow swaying in the
window.
The face was covered by a black cloth; it’s the man who took my
life.
Before I knew it, the window was open and a gust of wind blew into the
room. That man grabbed on the window frame and entered the room easily.
「——Tch.」
A soft click of the tongue came from my brother. When I turned to him, I
saw that a knife was deeply lodged into his arm.
The most shocking thing was that this man in black had been lurking
outside the window, quietly observing our movements in the room. Then, he
threw a knife at me the moment I was off guard but because my brother
protected me, the knife pierced his arm instead.

「Don’t come over!」
My brother stopped me with a harsh roar when I tried to run over to him.
Then he took a step forward to hide me from the man.
「Rea, run.」
「But…」
It was obvious that something was wrong with my brother.
My brother who could laugh and drink away even with a broken arm or three
arrows stuck in his body was sweating profusely from a small knife in his
arm. His breathing was also a little ragged.
I abruptly thought of the loop from before.
Could it be that the man clad in black covered the blade in poison?
「Ines! Someone, anyone! Call for someone!!」
I shouted at the other side of the door.
「Quit shouting; I told you to run!」
My brother bellowed at me but fell onto one knee as he did so.
As I thought, something was wrong with my brother's body.
That man drew his sword and looked right at me without sparing a glance at
my brother who could not move.
Then, he made a beeline right for me.
「Don’t even think about it!」
Although my older brother had fallen onto his knees on the ground, he
mustered all the strength he had and threw a clenched fist into that man’s
side.
The man was hit by the blow and was blasted towards the wall with a loud
noise; his sword fell by his feet. And my brother, unable to support
himself, fell onto the ground like a rock with a loud thud.
I immediately rushed towards the man who was thrown against the wall. If
things go on like this, my brother will be killed. Before that, I have to
take away the weapon from that man!
I recklessly reached for the sword but was kicked in the chest and fell
backwards. For a moment there, I couldn’t breathe and felt like I
was seeing stars. I got up to my feet, still holding my aching chest as I
saw that staggering to his feet, sword in hand.
「What are you… doing… you idiot…」
Even though he had fallen to the ground, supporting his body with his
hands, my brother was still telling me to run. But his voice was so
weak——there’s no way I could just abandon him and leave.
I was the one who dragged my brother into this. At the very least, I have
to protect him.
I don’t know if I could shield him, but I still tried to cover my brother
with my body and closed my eyes tightly.
I could hear footsteps approaching from behind me.
「…」
I could feel the man’s breathing very close to me; I wondered if he was
looking down at me. For a few seconds, or maybe a few minutes, nothing
happened.
「…This… is… for…」
I vaguely heard a man’s voice.
And then, I felt a sharp pain shoot through my back.
「Argh…」
A groan slips out of my lips from the pain. I slipped off my brother’s
body, falling onto the ground like a puppet with its strings cut.
「Damn it! Rea… hey…」
His voice sounded so distant.
I was still conscious, but my vision was slowly turning white and I
couldn't hear or see any more.
I’m sorry, Brother Tris.
I wanted to tell him that; I moved my mouth but I'm not sure if I managed
to get it across.
In the pure white world, I let go of my consciousness with those thoughts
running through my mind.
