S.C.I. Mystery Files Case 2 Chapter 41

Killer Training Camp - Chapter 41 Clues

“Kitty… Kitty…”

Someone seemed to be calling him; Zhan Zhao frowned slightly and turned away from the sound, hiding his head under the blanket, ignoring it.

“Kitty~~~”

The gentle voice continued to call out to him persistently, “Kitty, wake up.”

“Hngg~~” Zhan Zhao wrapped himself into a burrito with the blanket as he grunted sleepily,

“Damn Mouse~~”
“I’m gonna kiss you if you still don’t wake up.”

Then, he felt a hot and moist sensation coming from the back of his neck~~~ It gradually moved upwards, enveloping his ear.

“Ah~~” Any hint of sleep flew out of Zhan Zhao’s system as he jumped up from the sofa, face red while holding on to that ear. He glared daggers at a certain Mouse—who had a refreshing smile on his face—that was simply asking for it.

Bai Yutang, however, was completely unfazed and even leaned in to give him a peck on the mouth. “Good morning.”

…!…

Zhan Zhao was so startled he threw a paw at Bai Yutang and whispered through clenched teeth, “You crazy Mouse! We’re in the office!!”

Bai Yutang shrugged it off with a smile, “So what, the door is closed.”

Zhan Zhao massaged his somewhat sore neck. “How did I end up here?”

“You fell asleep last night and since Gongsun was at your place, I carried you over to mine.”

“What about you? Where did you sleep if I took your couch?” He received the coffee Bai Yutang passed to him. I’m still so sleepy~~

“I slept here as well last night. Two people sleeping on the couch is really quite cramped.” Bai Yutang answered casually.

Pffut[1]~~~~” The coffee in Zhan Zhao's mouth spurted all over the floor.

“Damned Cat! You better wash the carpet for me!!!”

“Stupid Mouse! No wonder I’m sore all over! It must be because I didn’t sleep well last night!!”

“I lent you my sofa and you’re still complaining??”
“You should’ve slept on the floor!”
“I will catch a cold!”
“Your species don’t catch colds!”
What species?”
“Have you ever heard of bacteria catching a cold?”
“I got downgraded again?!”
“Hmph~~ I want omelette for breakfast! Go get it!!”
“Damn Cat! I must have owed you in my previous life!”
“With chilli!”

Fifteen minutes later, Zhan Zhao was sitting in his office, happily drinking away on a cup of milk while munching on an omelette.

“Where’s Gongsun?” Zhan Zhao asked Bai Yutang when he saw the empty sofa.

“Oh, he fell asleep last night after taking some medication, then my brother came and picked him up.”

“Gongsun was willing to go with him…?” Zhan Zhao asked carefully.

“He was all groggy at the time so he probably wasn’t conscious of it; either way, he didn’t resist.” Bai Yutang answered while sipping on the coffee Zhan Zhao had leftover from earlier.

“Hmm~~~~” Zhan Zhao hummed while his eyes turned to the side thoughtfully as he ate.

“Damn Cat, what are you thinking about?” Bai Yutang was amused by his reaction.

“Hmm~~” Zhan Zhao concluded after some thought, “How very curious~~ Something is definitely up.”

“Captain~~” The other members of the team were slowly coming into the office.

Xu Qing ran in and said, “I have important information!”

“Tell everyone to gather in the conference room!” Bai Yutang ordered.

In the conference room.

“Jon King?” Everyone looked at Xu Qing incredulously. “Are you really certain Jon King is the one who bought the gun?”

“Yes!” Xu Qing nodded. “I got this information from Han Zhang, so it shouldn’t be wrong.”

“But… Qi Lei tried to kill him with the gun he gave him?!” Wang Chao was a little puzzled.

“No, the real target Qi Lei intended to murder should be Dr. Wilson,” Zhan Zhao said, “The move to kill Jon was most likely just a cover.”

“Mhm, that way no one would suspect him.” Bai Yutang mused.

“Also, I looked up Jon King’s details yesterday,” Xu Qing added, “He used to be a medical student from Columbia University. After graduation, he worked as a hospital anesthesiologist for two years before suddenly switching careers to become an artiste.”

“Anaesthesiologist?” Bai Yutang exclaimed at that information, ‘Which is to say that he’s very familiar with the properties of anaesthetics?”

“Last night, Laura indeed tested positive for drug overdose which triggered hallucination,” Zhang Long said while looking at the statement from last night, “According to her, medication was of sedative which she had been taking all this while and it was Jon King who prepared it for her.”

“Hah! This is solid evidence!” Zhan Zhao appeared to be gloating a little. “Now we can catch that pervert in, can’t we??”

“Pervert?” His word choice confused everyone in the room.

“Ahem~~” Bai Yutang cleared his throat before saying, “Zhang Long, Wang Chao, go bring Jon King in. Just tell him we need his cooperation for this investigation.”

“Capt, we’re not getting a warrant for his arrest? We have enough grounds for that and the evidence is conclusive,” Wang Chao suggested.

“No, it's too early to make an arrest,” Zhan Zhao said, “Besides, he is a celebrity. It’s not conducive to our investigation if we attracted too much attention.”

“But I think there’s a good chance he will refuse to come if we ask him to cooperate with the investigation.” Zhang Long felt a little troubled.

“Oh~~” Zhan Zhao glanced at Bai Yutang with a meaningful smile and said, “Don’t worry, just say that it’s Captain Bai who wants him to come, he’ll probably happily skip his way over.”

Zhang Long and Wang Chao left with a head full of questions while Bai Yutang glared at Zhan Zhao. “Kitty! What a strong sour smell[2]~”

“Oh really?” Zhan Zhao turned on his heel and headed for the door, looking back at Bai Yutang before leaving. “I’m going to go take a nap first; I’ll have to properly interrogate that golden-haired pervert later!!”

Bai Yutang couldn’t help but shake his head and laugh. This Cat, he’s still holding a grudge…

“Captain…” On the side, Xu Qing seemed to be having a dilemma about whether or not he should tell Bai Yutang about it.

“What is it? If you have something to say, just say it.” Bai Yutang sat on the conference table and looked at him.

“Um… T-Those two subordinates of your brother’s…”

“What about them?” Bai Yutang prompted.

“Uh… Han Zhang told me that they were the ones who found the source of the gun. It’s just that their methods were a little… unconventional.”

“Ke…” Bai Yutang was amused by the stammering Xu Qing and reached out to pat him on the shoulder. “Don’t worry, they won’t do anything outside the boundaries of the law here.”

Having said that, when he got up to leave the room, he thought internally: Da Ge, oh Da Ge, please don’t do anything stupid~~~

Gongsun woke up, sitting up and pushed the thick, heavy blanket off his body, gasping for air as he did so—I almost got crushed by the quilt.

His body felt quite refreshed and his head didn’t hurt anymore. Although he still had some fatigue in him, it wasn’t as uncomfortable as yesterday.

He got out of bed, staggered into the bathroom, and took a shower…
After putting on a fresh change of pyjamas, he came out into the living room wiping his dripping wet hair. His stomach was feeling kind of hungry, it seemed like he hadn’t eaten anything all this time.

“Are you hungry?”

The sudden voice that sounded behind him gave Gongsun a start. When he turned around, he was greeted with the sight of Bai Jintang standing about 5 or 6 steps away from him, staring at him fixedly. Gongsun didn’t say anything in response; he turned back around and continued drying his hair.

“I said I wouldn’t come but I was still feeling a bit worried so I came to check on you. Are you feeling better?” Bai Jintang paid no heed to Gongsun’s disregard and continued talking.

Gongsun still remained silent, standing there in a daze.

“I want to have a talk with you,” Bai Jintang did not give up and pressed on.

Gongsun walked to the door, opened it, and stood by it.

With a soft sigh, Bai Jintang had no other choice but to walk to the door. Before going out, he said to Gongsun with a low voice, “Breakfast is on the table. Remember to take your medicine and rest well after eating.”

And with that, he turned and left.
Gongsun closed the door but remained behind the tightly closed door for a while. When he heard the sound of the lift doors opening and closing, he opened the door again, only to see Bai Jintang still standing in front of it.

Slightly embarrassed, the other party stuttered, “…Y-You should blow dry your hair.”

Gongsun lifted his head to look at him.
Bai Jintang felt a little worked up—thankfully, he’s still willing to look at me.

“Uh… I’ll be going.” Bai Jintang walked into the lift somewhat reluctantly after reaching out to help Gongsun close the door.

Gongsun stood there in a daze for a while before going to his room to get a hairdryer. Then, he started blow-drying his hair on the sofa. From a distance, he could see that the curtains[3] in the president's office of the Bai Group across the street were rolled up.

After some hesitation, he eventually still decided not to close the curtains in the living room.

After blow-drying his hair, Gongsun stood up and walked over to the table where a light and refreshing Chinese breakfast that was still nice and steaming was placed. He sat down and quietly ate his breakfast. Then he went back to the sofa to read the newspaper for a while before taking his medicine as he was told. When he walked back into the bedroom, the curtains in the room were opened as well but he didn’t bother with them and instead climbed onto bed, tucked himself in and fell asleep.

In the distance, Bai Jintang had been standing in front of the window staring blankly at the room across. He had forgotten to move, allowing the coffee in his hand to slowly turn cold as his heart gradually softened—Oh, Gongsun, you’re so gentle. so very gentle.

In the interrogation room of the police station, Jon King sat there all composed without a lawyer.

Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao’s entrance into the interrogation elicited a faint smile from him. They sat opposite him.

“I didn’t do anything yesterday,” Jon King said all innocently, “Did you have to go as far as to arrest me?”

“We invited you over to cooperate in the investigation, or could it be that you think you did something that warranted an arrest?” Zhan Zhao asked in turn.

Bai Yu Tang waved a little white flag in his mind. Holy crap, this Cat’s firepower is ramped up to the max right from the get-go. The only end for this foreigner today is to be a cannon fodder.”

“Keke~~” Jon chuckled at Zhan Zhao, “Why are you so hostile towards me? This isn’t the tone of someone requesting cooperation with the investigation.”

Zhan Zhao returned with a smile, “Then don’t cooperate, given your situation, it can be directly changed into an interrogation.”

“Oh?” Jon seemed piqued by those words. “I wonder what conditions I’ve checked?”

Bai Yutang took out a medicine bottle from the evidence bag and asked, “Is this the medicine you dispensed to Ms. Laura?”

Jon glanced at it and nodded. “That’s right.”

“It is illegal to produce psychedelic drugs in private.”

“It isn’t though, in my country.” Jon appeared pretty regretful. “I don’t know much about your country’s legal system…” Then, he blinked meaningfully at Bai Yutang and continued, “If you have the time… you could teach me.”

Bai Yutang felt the pressure exuding from Zhan Zhao increase by a notch and prayed for Jon internally: May God help you!!

“Did you buy a Barrett M82A1 sniper rifle?”

“Yes,” Jon answered rather casually.

“Did you just admit to illegal possession of firearms?” Bai Yutang looked at him.

Jon happily met his eyes. “Oh, it's not illegal to possess firearms in our country~~ Besides, the gun has been lost. Once again, if you’re interested, you can teach me about the laws of your country.”

Bai Yutang frowned at the cheeky smile on Jon’s face; he really wanted to throw his fist at it but right at that moment, Zhan Zhao, who was beside him, gave him a tap which meant: I’ll do it!!

He took out photos of Jia Zhengyan’s corpse and placed them in front of Jon together with that bottle of pills and asked with a sneer, “I wonder if killing someone is considered a crime in your country.”

Jon froze momentarily at those photos.

Zhan Zhao quickly added, “Right now, we have every evidence to charge you for involvement in a murder case. Do you want to call your lawyer?”

The expression on Jon’s face instantly took a 180, but Zhan Zhao was not about to give him the chance to process this information, as he continued pressing the former, “Let me tell you another piece of good news: this murder is one in a series of murders. Your country seems to have a very diverse range of penalties for serial killers. What do you suppose you’d get in the wheel of fortune? Hanging? Or perhaps the electric chair?”

Jon raised a hand to rub his face rather dispiritedly as he slumped over in his seat; Bai Yutang lifted a brow at this and remarked, “Looks like you won’t have the time to study the laws of another country; you should properly study your country’s laws first. In your case, you’ll at least be sentenced to 200 in prison even if you don’t get the death penalty.”

“Alright, alright~~” Jon raised his hands in surrender like he had given up. “You win; I’ll talk, I’ll talk.”

After that, Jon took out a wallet from his pocket, opened it, and pointed to a photo for Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao to see.

When the two of them leaned in to have a look, they saw a young man with a brilliant bright smile in the photo.
The moment Zhan Zhao laid his eyes on the photo, he understood why Jon was interested in Bai Yutang… Although the man in the photo was a foreigner with blond hair and blue eyes, there was quite a resemblance between his features and Bai Yutang.
(lilies: blond Bai Yutang lollol?)

“His name is Angel; the love of my life.” Jon seemed to reminisce about the past as he gazed at the photo. “He got caught in a car accident when he was 20 years old and suffered significant damage to the head which caused him to have frequent hallucinations. He was such a cheerful person but he slowly started getting depressed. I brought him to the best psychologist in all of the United States at the time and that was Dr. Wilson. I had hoped that he would be able to cure him but to my shock, he committed suicide after undergoing a period of therapy.”

Jon seemed to be getting a little agitated as he continued talking, “We were so in love yet he chose to take his own life, leaving me all by myself. I was lonely; I couldn’t work or carry out day-to-day life anymore. And then, I went into acting, that glamorous and debauched environment won’t let me feel loneliness. Moreover, this job allowed me to meet a lot of people, and so I searched frantically for someone similar to him, but the more I looked, the more I came to realise that he was one and only… that is, until I met you at the banquet that day.”

Jon sighed as he said, “You and Angel are really similar, but you’re much stronger than him… He was too fragile.”

Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang exchanged a look before saying, “That’s why you hate Dr. Wilson?”

“Of course I hate him! He’s just some fame-greedy[4] hypocrite! He killed the person I loved the most! Did you know, I later learnt that the medicine and treatment he gave Angel had never been used before—he was experimenting on my beloved to prove some bullshit theory that would later bring him glory and fame!”

Bai Yutang took out that Child of the Devil card and asked, “What is this?”

Jon glanced at it before taking a breath and replying with a smile, “That’s all I have to say. As for the rest, I’ll wait for my lawyer.”

He then remained silent.

Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang came out from the interrogation room with a disgruntled look on their face. This Jon was quite similar to Yang Feng—they don’t seem to shy away from the crimes they’ve committed but when it came to that “Killer Training”, they fell completely silent, as if they’re trying to protect something… It’s all so perplexing.

“Don’t think about it anymore, my brain’s about to explode from thinking. Come on, Kitty, let’s go get some food from the canteen.” Bai Yutang grabbed Zhan Zhao and dragged him off.

In the canteen of the police station, while Bai Yutang was ordering food, Zhan Zhao, who was standing next to him with a tray, saw Bai Chí playing rock-paper-scissors with a child not too far away.

That kid looked rather familiar. After Bai Yutang bought their food, he saw Zhan Zhao staring blankly ahead and followed his line of sight. “Oh~~ Isn’t that Lu Fang’s son?”

“Ah!” It finally hit Zhan Zhao—it’s little Lu Zhen from the previous case.

Lu Zhen seemed to be on a losing streak, his face was full of incredulity while Bai Chí giggled.

Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang shared the same slightly mean thought: it feels like these two are around the same mental age. They shared a look; they had found toys to pass time and entertain them. The two older brothers walked over to the two younger brothers, food in hand and a mischievous grin on their face.
(lilies: i think the thing about mental age could be said the same about these two dorks XD)

“Ah! Uncle Zhan, Uncle Bai!” Lu Zhen greeted them amiably.

After the two of them sat down at the same table as them, Bai Yutang asked, “What are you guys playing?”

“Oh!” Lu Zhen answered with a face full of admiration, “He’s so good! He keeps winning!”

“That good?” Bai Yutang asked curiously.

“Mhm!” Lu Zhen nodded his head. “He lost a few times at the beginning but then he said he would never lose again and sure enough!”

Zhan Zhao looked at Bai Chí in understanding and asked, “Is it your higher mathematics again?”

Bai Chí smiled sheepishly.

Zhan Zhao carried little Lu Zhen over to his side and whispered a few words in his ear which put a curious look on the latter’s face as he asked, “Really?”

“Why don’t you give it a try if you don’t believe me!” Zhan Zhao bit into his sandwich and said cheekily.

“Alright!” Lu Zhen rolled up his sleeves and said to Bai Chí. “Again!”

This time, little Lu Zhen stared fixedly at Bai Chí’s eyes and won every hand. Bai Yutang was thoroughly amused by this turn of events and after losing twenty times in a row, little Bai Chí finally raised his hands in defeat. “I give up! I admit defeat~~~”

Lu Zhen cheered and ran away. Intrigued by this situation, Bai Chí asked Zhan Zhao, “W-Why did this happen?”

Meanwhile, Bai Yutang chortled from the side, “Don't engage in any gambling-related activities with this Cat! It will definitely end in your loss!!”

Zhan Zhao rolled his eyes at him and answered Bai Chí’s question, “It's actually quite simple. Everyone has some subconscious habits, I just observed yours: your eyes will unconsciously look at the lower right when you’re going to put out scissors, blink when you’re putting paper, and tilt upwards slightly when you’re using rock.”

“Keke, you’re so similar…” Bai Chí giggled like a child[5] as he nibbled on his bread.

“Similar? Similar to what?” Zhan Zhao asked mirthfully.

“Similar to this person I met yesterday; it’s like you can see through hearts,” Bai Chí answered with a look of fascination.

“Are you sure?[6]” Bai Yutang found his words hard to believe. “You mean there's more than one of these monsters?”

At those words, Zhan Zhao stomped on Bai Yutang’s foot so hard the latter almost choked on his sandwich and was desperately hitting on his chest.

“Hmph!” Zhan Zhao handed him a glass of water before prompting Bai Chí with another question, “What did he see through?”

“Well, he didn’t exactly do that.” Bai Chí blinked in thought. “But he said some interesting things which I haven’t been able to figure out.”

“Oh? What did he say?”
“He said ‘If you can’t become the child of God, then you can only become the child of the Devil. Because they have something that humans don’t.’”

“Clang…” The spoon originally held in Zhan Zhao's hand fell into the bowl of soup.

On the side, Bai Yutang and Bai Chí looked up in confusion at Zhan Zhao who had a disconcerted look on his face.
  “
Kitty?” Bai Yutang tapped Zhan Zhao.

Instead of reacting to Bai Yutang, Zhan Zhao suddenly started muttering to himself, “I get it, I get it now!”

With that, he stood up and rushed out.

“Kitty?!” Bai Yutang threw aside his sandwich and chased after the man.

This left Bai Chí at a loss, frozen on the spot. After some hesitation, he went after them as well with his bread in hand.

1. Taking suggestions for how to word the sound ahaha
2. Referring to the smell/taste of vinegar because jealousy in Chinese is "吃醋" or eat vinegar if translated word for word. You'll definitely see this appear a lot in most Chinese novels.
3. Since it was described as rolled up, it could be blinds but it isn't super clear in the raws.
4. Written as "沽名钓誉" which means to gain fame and good reputation through underhanded ways.
5. Written as "傻乎乎" which in this context feels like calling someone silly in an endearing way but I can't really phrase it in ;-;;
6. Written as "不是吧?" which is more “it can't be” with a question mark

Please feedback to me in the comments below if you find any typos or terrible grammar, etc that you think I should change. Or maybe you think my interpretation is completely off lol Help me help you have a better reading experience ahahah what a tongue twister XD
