S.C.I. Mystery Files Case 2 Chapter 40

Killer Training Camp - Chapter 40 Fate

The two of them returned to the garden again, only to find that Pang Yu, who had been standing there, was gone.

Sharing a look, Zhan Zhao shrugged, “He got away.”

That put a silly grin on Bai Yutang’s face—Looks like I’m still the most important to this Cat.

Zhan Zhao rolled his eyes at him.
Just then, Professor Wilson walked to the centre of the garden with a glass of wine in hand and said loudly, “I thank you all for coming down today; this experience has helped me fully realise how important the heart is to a psychologist1.

His humorous words drew laughter from the guests present.

“Next! Let us have a toast! To health!” Wilson said as he raised his glass.

The crowd followed suit and downed their drink in one go.
Neither Zhan Zhao nor Bai Yutang had a drink in their hand so naturally, they didn’t have anything to drink… And thus, this provided the window which allowed them to witness something unusual.
They saw Dr. Wilson’s wife, that elegant Ms. Laura suddenly rushed towards Wilson in a stagger.

A cold glint flashed through the air.

Bai Yutang yelled, “Watch out!”

But Laura had already raised the knife in her hand…
The knife stabbed right into Wilson’s abdomen; Bai Yutang’s yell caused Wilson to turn around, hence, he was stabbed directly from the front instead of from the side.

Laura yanked the knife out and raised her hand, ready to deliver another blow.
However, at that moment, Bai Yutang had already flown over and pounced on her, locking her hands in a grip as the blade fell to the ground. It’s just that, right, now, it was as if Laura, who had been so gentle and quiet, had suddenly lost her mind; she kept struggling, trying to lunge forward to grab the knife.

Bai Yutang restrained her with brute force as a thought flashed through his mind: This old woman is so freaking strong… Something is not right. Then, he lifted his head and shouted at the security guards who were frozen in shock, “What are you just standing there for? Come over and help!”

At his words, the security guards rushed over to hold down Laura, who was struggling with all her might, as if they had been awoken from a dream.

Zhan Zhao had already dialled for an ambulance and the police.

Dr. Wilson fell into a pool of blood while holding his abdomen, but was still conscious and looked at his wife, who was screaming madly, with some disbelief. He told the security guards with what little strength he had left, “Don’t hurt her…”

The ambulance and police cars arrive at the double; Wilson was sent to the hospital while Laura was escorted away by the police.
Bai Yutang dusted himself off and looked at Zhan Zhao who walked over to his side.

“What do you think, Kitty?”

Zhan Zhao’s brows locked in a frown. “It’s too weird…”

“Yeah!” Bai Yutang nodded. “It’s like she’s been possessed by a ghost; I’ve never met an old lady this strong.”
(lilies: when you live with racists, you gotta be strong enuf to beat them up even if you're 80 ;x)

“Possessed?” Zhan Zhao repeated in a murmur.

“She’s like a whole new person!” Bai Yutang straightened up his clothes before freezing at his own words. “Like a whole new person?”

Zhan Zhao nodded, then scanned around before saying to Bai Yutang, “Pang Yu is gone.”

Bai Yutang frowned; this was all too fishy. As they talked, he took out his phone and called the S.C.I.

“Hello~~” The phone was picked up immediately which gave Bai Yutang a little start before he realised that it was Bai Chí who answered the phone.

“Bai Chí, are you the only one in the office?”

“Hmm… mhm.” Bai Chí glanced around the room—Jiang Ping was slumped over his desk drooling and Zhao Hu who had spent all day watching over Qi Le was also snoring away on the sofa.

“Head down to the city hospital right now,” Bai Yutang said succinctly, “Wilson has been stabbed. Go over and wait for him; notify me immediately if anything happens.”

“Uh…” Bai Chí was just about to say something but Bai Yutang had already hung up.

He looked to his left and then to his right, both Jiang Ping and Zhao Hu were still in lala land. Bai Chí messed up his own hair a little anxiously before grabbing his bag and darting out of the office.

In the office, Zhao Hu sat up while still making snoring sounds and looked at Jiang Ping who was also wide awake. “Will it be alright to just let that little guy go by himself?”

Jiang Ping wiped away his saliva and said, “Well, he’s got to train it up a little.”

The garden of the villa was packed with policemen and the guests had all suffered some shock. Jon King slumped over in his chair, staring blankly at the space in front of him.

Bai Yutang examined the venue with a stern expression. A policeman handed a small handbag to him—it’s Laura’s.

Upon opening the bag to have a look, his expression worsened. Zhan Zhao hurriedly moved over, only to see Bai Yutang take out a small pill bottle from the handbag—it was a bottle half-filled with coloured pills. There was also a card in the bag, exactly the same as the two in the white envelope sent to Dr. Wilson: black card, words in red, and a demon with a scythe.

This criminal committed a crime right under their noses! There’s no telling just how much anger filled their veins right now.

“Send it to the lab to get a breakdown of the composition,” He said as he handed the pill bottle to an officer.

Didididdididi~~~~~~ His phone rang.

Bai Yutang picked it up.

“Hello? …Ge…”

“Bai Chí? How is Dr. Wilson?” Bai Yutang asked somewhat anxiously.

“He’s… fine,” Bai Chí answered, “he didn’t suffer any fatal injuries…”

Bai Yutang heaved a long breath and Zhan Zhao who was watching his expressions just as nervously also heaved a sigh of relief.

“Ge…” Bai Chí seemed to have something more to add, “when that professor was unconscious, he kept muttering… ‘Child of the Devil’.”

Bai Yutang frowned, “Child of the Devil?”

“Mhm…” Bai Chí nodded at his phone. “He didn’t say anything else.”

“Great!” Bai Yutang told him, “I’ve already sent officers over to protect him, meanwhile, you take care on your way home.”

“Okay.”

After hanging up the phone, Bai Chí giggled while pacing around on the same spot. Just now, his brother told him ‘great’~~that superman like brother of his hehe~~~

He ran out of the hospital cheerfully and decided to take the Underground after some thought. That taxi he took just now was so expensive~~

He ran all the way to the underground station, panting as he caught the last train at the very last second.

Bai Chí huffed and puffed as he sat down on the seat. So tired, but so happy…
Today had got to be the happiest day of his entire life. He leaned back on his seat and recalled all the happy things that happened today: he transferred into the S.C.I. office today and everyone is so amiable and capable. In the afternoon, he got to listen to them analyse the case and also got to offer some help. In the evening, he even managed to go on an independent mission (although it was not dangerous) and was commended by Bai Yutang. And lastly, he managed to catch the last train!! Bai Chí’s life looked like it was going to be different from now on!

After huffing and puffing for some time, he finally evened out his breath, and only then did he realise he was the only one in this carriage… Ah no, there was someone else over there.

There was a man lying on a chair at the end of the carriage.
That man was dressed in a white sweater and white pants and had rather long black hair. He lied down, slightly curled up on the seat, unmoving.

Bai Chí quickly chased away those thoughts of haunted Underground stories that instantly flashed through his mind~~~ Pull yourself together!! I am a policeman!!

He gathered his courage and walked over. There he saw that because that man was lying, facing inside, his face was obscured by his hair and Bai Chí couldn’t really make out how he looked like.

“Sir… Sir?” Bai Chí gently tapped on him… No response.

“Hey, are you alright?” Bai Chí took a deep breath and tapped on the man again. Still no response??

Bai Chí mentally prepared himself for the possibility of being greeted by a face that was completely void of any facial features, or perhaps one that looked like Sadako2. Bai Chí plucked up his courage and helped that person up.

When the black hair parted slightly to reveal the face, little Bai Chí patted his chest: There’s a nose, a mouth, and a pair of eyes; he also doesn’t look like Sadako!! Thank goodness~~~

When he took a good look, he almost exclaimed, “Omg, so good-looking~~~”

That man wasn’t particularly young; his figure was on the lean side and his skin was very fair… Bai Chí thought that he wasn’t young because of the faint crinkles that extended from the corners of his mouth. It was a little hard to explain but it gave this feeling of some vicissitudes of age and some sexiness. Bai Chí didn’t have the words to describe it but when he saw those little crinkles on this face, all he knew was that it looked good.
(lilies: I think we all know who this is lollol)

“Are you alright?” Bai Chí shook that man, causing his head to tilt to the side; still no response.

Then, a terrifying thought flashed through Bai Chí’s mind: Could he have already…

He stretched out a trembling finger to feel for that person’s breath. Just when his finger touched that man’s lips… that person suddenly opened his mouth and bit Bai Chí’s finger.

“AaaAaaAAaaah!!” Bai Chí could feel his skin crawling. He backed away and plonked onto the ground.

That man opened his eyes and looked at Bai Chí with his head cocked to one side. Then, he fell to the side while holding his stomach, laughing so hard his shoulders shook.

He didn’t make a single sound as he laughed but anyone could tell what high spirits he was in; he virtually had tears in his eyes from laughing. His long, upturned narrow phoenix eyes3 gleamed from the reflection of the water in his eyes… Bai Chí was a little silly from this sight.

After laughing for a while, that man sat up straight again and looked at Bai Chí, blinking at him before lightly tracing his tongue over his upper lip.

Bai Chí immediately turned bright red and he stood up indignantly. “So… So you were tricking me!!” Then, he turned on his heel to leave but was held back by that man.

“I’m so hungry~~” That man said while pulling on Bai Chí before coming over to hug the latter by his waist. He buried his face in Bai Chí’s waist and started rubbing back and forth, whining with a kittenish quality, “My stomach hurts~~~”

Bai Chí just stood there in a daze, that person’s voice echoing in his ears—It sounds so ethereal… He didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at this man, who was clearly older than him, act cute to him. He looked like such a poor thing, like he was really hungry.

There was nothing Bai Chí could do but sit down next to him, take out a piece of chocolate from his bag and pass it to that man. “Here… eat this.”

The man looked at the chocolate, then at Bai Chí before tilting his head upwards and opening his mouth with a “Ah~~”

Bai Chí froze momentarily, then he realised that the man was asking him to feed him… Seeing that he was in a good mood today, Bai Chí peeled off the plastic wrapping and carefully placed it in that man’s mouth.

After eating a piece, that man leaned on Bai Chí again, snuggling against the latter’s shoulder, “More.”

“You… How do you know that I-I still have more??” Bai Chí gave him a confused look.

The man didn't answer, but just leaned in closer, “I want more~~”

Only after Bai Chí stuffed all four pieces of Dove chocolate that he had in his bag into that man’s mouth, did the latter smack his lips as he rested against Bai Chí’s shoulder contentedly.

“Why… Why did you scare me just now?” Bai Chí asked angrily.

That man ignored his question and instead came up to sniff him. “Hospital.”

Bai Chí got a start, “You… How did you know I went to the hospital?”

That man turned away smugly.

His words instantly piqued Bai Chí’s interest; this person seemed a little crazy, but then he also didn’t seem that crazy~~~

“My name is Bai Chí.” He decided to try and communicate with this person.

That man turned back round to glance at him before bending over laughing again.

Bai Chí blushed. “It’s… Bai Chí! The same Chí from the word for galloping!!”

The man stopped laughing, looked at Bai Chí, and said, “Your family name is Bai?”

“Mhm!” Bai Chí nodded in response. “What about you?”

That man came up to his ear and whispered, “Not telling you.”

Bai Chí decided it was better not to communicate with this person!

“What’s bothering you?” that man asked despite the decision Bai Chí made in his mind. “Since you gave me something to eat, I’ll help you solve a problem.” He said as he wiggled a finger. “Go ahead, don’t hold back.”

Bai Chí looked at him somewhat dumbfounded, somehow this person before him reminded him of Zhan Zhao. Both of them seemed to be able to see through hearts but they gave off completely different vibes.

“That… Child of the Devil…” Bai Chí blurted out the words that had been bothering him this entire time. For some reason, he just felt that this person in front of him might be able to give him an answer. “Do you know about it?”

That man stared at Bai Chí for a long while before saying with a faint smile on his face, “If you can’t become the child of God, then you can only become the child of the Devil.” Then, he tapped on Bai Chí’s forehead meaningfully and continued, “Because they have something that humans don’t.”

Bai Chí looked blankly at the man in front of him; the train slowed down and that person got up to his feet. He gently caressed Bai Chí’s hair as he leaned into the latter’s ear and said, “Don’t worry, you still have a choice.” As he said that, he kissed Bai Chí on the hair. “See you next time.”

By the time Bai Chí snapped out of it, that person had already exited the Tube.
He hastily jumped to his feet to chase after that man but the doors closed right at that moment. He could stick himself against the doors calling out to that man, “What’s your name~~~”

As the train began to move forward, Bai Chí started running in the opposite direction. He had this feeling that he was very close to solving the puzzle; he just needed one more step. As that man’s figure drew further away, he lifted his hand and brought his index finger to his lips, smiling at Bai Chí just before he disappeared.

It was already in the wee hours of the morning by the time Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao returned to the police station from Dr. Wilson’s villa.
Just as they exited the lift, they were greeted by the sight of Zhao Hu rushing towards them head-on.

“What are you doing?” Bai Yutang looked at Zhao Hu who appeared like he was scared out of his mind.

“Ah! Captain, you guys are back? I’m leaving!” Zhao Hu gave a short answer and dashed into the lift.

“Where are you going?”

“To look for Qi Le.” Then, the left doors closed.

Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang exchanged a confused look and went on their way into the office.

The moment the office door opened, they immediately understood what was up.

There, in the S.C.I. office, sat a gloomy Bai Jintang.
The air is so heavy~~~

The two of them were completely on the same page as they walked in obediently and greeted the man, “Da Ge, what brings you here?”

Bai Jintang raised his head to look at the two men before lowering it once more and returned to emitting his air of gloom. Zhan Zhao glanced at Jiang Ping who was hiding far away. Jiang Ping pointed a trembling finger at the Medical Examiner’s Office next door. Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao immediately nodded their heads in understanding and got ready to make a break for it.

But right at that moment, the office doors opened and in came Gongsun with a folder in hand.

Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao were about to greet him when they froze in shock—Gongsun looked a little weak- no, more accurately, he looked horrible. His face looked white as a ghost; he looked so frail like he would collapse at any moment.

“Gongsun…” Zhan Zhao really wanted to go up and support him. How did this happen? What on earth happened??

Gongsun didn’t pay any attention to either of their reactions, he just handed the document to Bai Yutang and said, “This is Jia Zhengyan’s autopsy report and the drug analysis.”

…!…

His words started the two of them—So fast?!

“Jia Zhengyan died from cyanide poisoning.”

“Cyanide?” Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang were taken aback. “You mean those pills contain cyanide?”

Gongsun nodded and added, “Each of these coloured pills have different compositions. The ones on Jia Zhengyan contained highly toxic cyanide; the ones Zhao Hu brought back is a mixture of opioids which can indeed relieve pain; and the ones you just sent in contains ketamine and other highly effective hallucinogenic agents.”

“Hallucinogenic drugs?” Bai Yutang’s brows wrinkled together. “A drug that can cause hallucinations in people?”

Gongsun nodded. “One of extremely high efficacy.”

“That is to say that Jia Zhengyan was murdered and Laura attacked Dr. Wilson because she had taken hallucinogenic drugs.” Zhan Zhao’s face was grim.

“Are there any other findings?” Bai Yutang asked Gongsun.

“That’s all for now.” With that said, Gongsun was about to turn and leave when his body suddenly swayed and he instinctively grabbed the table next to him.

Bai Jintang who had been watching his every move abruptly sprung to his feet. He wanted to help Gongsun but his hand was swatted away before his fingers could even touch the other party. Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang watched the two men's actions from the side, feeling somewhat at a loss as to what to do.

Gongsun leaned his weight against the tabletop to ease the dizziness while Bai Jintang’s hand hung in mid-air, not daring to approach Gongsun yet reluctant to withdraw.

Zhan Zhao went up to help Gongsun and said, “Let me help you over to rest for a bit.” Then, he brought Gongsun to his office and got the latter to rest on the sofa.

Bai Jintang quietly watched all of this outside the door when Bai Yutang suddenly asked, “Ge, what happened to Gongsun?”

Seeing his silence, Bai Yutang thought about it for a while before gasping and asking in a small voice, “It couldn’t be that… last night… you forcefully…”

Bai Jintang looked up to glare at him and said with a sigh, “Help me send him back later. I won’t be going to his place for a while. Get him to stay put at home.” After saying that, he walked out with big strides.

Zhan Zhao walked out of his office and came to Bai Yu Tang's side. “Hmm, Da Ge left?”

Bai Yutang responded with a nod. “How’s Gongsun?”

“He’s running a fever. I wanted to send him to the hospital but he refused.”

Bai Yutang wanted to laugh. This Kitty is really dense enough, how could he go to the hospital in his state? “Go to the infirmary and get some anti-inflammatory and fever medication.”

“Mhm.” Zhan Zhao nodded and walked out.

Bai Yutang paced around for a bit before slowly making his way into Zhan Zhao’s office. Once inside, he leaned against the desk and looked at Gongsun who was lying on the sofa. Gongsun’s eyes were closed; Bai Yutang didn’t know whether he was really asleep or he just didn’t want to see him.

“Um…” He scratched his head like he was trying to organise his thoughts. “Can I bother you for just a few minutes?”

Gongsun slowly opened his eyes—what a rare sight to behold, Bai Yutang being at a loss for what to do.

After a sigh, Bai Yutang said, “I probably can’t speak as clearly as that Cat, but…” he rolled up his sleeves to show Gongsun as he spoke, “look at this.”

Gongsun glanced at Bai Yutang’s arm; there were a few marks slightly lighter than the rest of his skin, it looked like scratched marks caused by a human hand. Gongsun looked at him puzzledly.

“Da Ge got into an accident when I was very young; you probably know about that, right?”

Gongsun nodded.

Bai Yutang heaved a sigh of relief internally. Thankfully Gongsun was being quite cooperative so he continued, “After that, he spent two years in therapy and when he came, he had forgotten everything, it was like he had become a different person.”

“When he came back, he spent a lot of time with Kitty and I. I remember that one time, I told him that Kitty and I were going to run away from home then he tied us up and locked us in a room; for fear that we were really going to leave.”

“This injury was from when I was seven years old. We had a fight and I told him I didn’t want him to be my brother anymore, so he held a death grip on my arm and refused to let go… In the end, my dad only managed to break my free from his grip by dislocating his wrist. I got these wounds because he wouldn’t let go.”

“Because there was the risk of danger when we were with him, my family sent him abroad… it wasn’t until we became adults that we get in touch again.” Bai Yutang seemed to feel rather apologetic. “To be honest, Kitty and I really like him, it’s just that I would still feel a little scared to see him when I was a child.”

“He has a very bad relationship with our family,” Bai Yutang continued with a smile, “Apparently he’s some big boss outside, gang leader, or mafia? I’m not too sure either, but in any case it's a job that doesn’t require a heart; he just needed to make others fear him.”

“He came to visit us once when I was still schooling. Luckily, Kitty is more sensitive than me, I heard he had always maintained contact by writing to Da Ge, keeping him updated about what we're doing. In his professional jargon, Da Ge falls into the category of ‘mentally deficient’,” Bai Yutang said with a wry smile, “As long as he likes it, he expresses it in the most direct way. Maybe it’s because he’s lost too much so he is most afraid of losing, the more he likes it, the more afraid he is… And he might use rather extreme ways to keep the people he likes.”

Seeing that Zhan Zhao was already walking out of the elevator with the medication from a distance, Bai Yutang got up and walked towards the office door. Just before he went out, he turned around and said to Gongsun, “I had thought that my brother wouldn’t be able to like anyone anymore… Gongsun, you’re the first person who dares to throw flying scalpels at him; please don’t give up on him.”

When Zhan Zhao entered the office, he saw Bai Yutang walk out with his sleeves rolled up, revealing those familiar scars, and smiled in understanding.

He poured a cup of hot water and went in, fed the medicine to Gongsun, and pulled the blanket over the latter. He went out again and just as he reached the corridor, he was abruptly yanked to the side.

“What are you doing?” Zhan Zhao glared daggers at Bai Yutang who encased him in his arms.

Bai Yutang did not answer, but instead leaned in to kiss him with a smile. As he kissed Zhan Zhao, he muttered a question, “What would I do without you, Kitty?”

Zhan Zhao froze momentarily before ruffling up the other’s hair, “Stupid Mouse!!”

On the soda, Gongsun buried his face in the fluffy blanket, lost in thought~~~

On the outskirts of S City, a heart-rending scream came from an abandoned factory building.

A man fell to the concrete floor and kept begging for mercy, “I’ll talk~~ I’ll talk~~”

He was a young man in his early twenties with a head of bleached blond hair. He was the middleman that arranged most of the arms dealings in the S City underworld. He desperately shouted a name, “That’s him! He’s the one who bought the gun!”

Two identical figures emerged from the shadow and said mischievously, “See, didn’t we already tell you to be good and tell us? Geez~~ Caused yourself so much pain for nothing~~”

Then, the twins looked up and spoke to the person who had been hiding in a corner of the factory for a long time, “Did you hear that? Officer!?”

Their words gave that person a start, his palms were all wet with sweat from the nerves.

The twins smiled and walked out the door, their mouth still saying, “That name should be very helpful to you, shouldn’t it?”

It was not until the two figures disappeared into the darkness and all was quiet again that that person fell limply onto the floor, covered in cold sweat, after a long time.
He took out his phone with much struggle and dialled a number.

“Hello? Is this Xu Qing?”
“Yes, this is Han Zhang. You asked me to check the source of the gun last time; I already have the answer—the person who bought the gun is Jon King.”

Each with her nails was tearing at her breast;
they smote them with their hands, and cried so loud,
that to the Poet I drew close in dread.

Even as at Arles, where marshy turns the Rhone,
or as at Pola near Quarnaro’s gulf,
which bounds Italia, and her border bathes,
the sepulchres make all the ground uneven;
so likewise did they here on every side,
save that their nature was more bitter here;
for flames were spread about within the tombs,
whereby they glowed with such intensity,
that no art needeth greater heat for iron.
The lids of all of them were raised, and wails
so woeful issued thence, that of a truth
they seemed the wails of wretched, tortured men.

The coloured pills spill from their hand, scattering onto the surface. Watching as those pills bounced and rolled across the surface as if they were alive; it was as if they could see the lives of those shackled to their fate, struggling and tumbling.

  4. It's unfortunate that the Bai family thought that the best way to deal with Bai Jingtan's trauma is by sending him to another country. That was the time he needed support and understanding, but they saw him as a burden and pushed it away. I am disappointed in them.
