S.C.I. Mystery Files Case 2 Chapter 39

Killer Training Camp - Chapter 39 Child of the Devil

When Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang arrived at the S.C.I. office, they were greeted with an empty room. All there was was Jiang Ping who was camping behind a computer. He got up and said hello to the two men with a piece of bread in his mouth.

“Where’s everyone? They all went out?” Bai Yutang asked.

Jiang Ping nodded. “Xu Qing said he’s going to take over from Zhao Hu; heard he’s almost going bonkers from dealing with that lass. Wang Chao and Zhang Long are still tailing Jia Zhengyan and Gongsun didn’t come today.”

“Cough cough~~~” Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang couldn’t help but cough awkwardly when they heard Gongsun’s name.

“Did you stay up all night again?” Zhan Zhao asked pointedly at the dark circles under Jiang Ping’s eyes.

“Sigh~~~” Jiang Ping shook his head like it couldn’t be helped. “I was trying to look up some information about that killer training camp, in the end, there was just so much information on the internet about murderers, killers, etc.; I don’t even know where to begin. Moreover, two people even invited me to commit suicide with them!”

Just then, the door to the office opened and in came little Bai Chí hugging a box in his arms.

“Morning,” Zhan Zhao greeted him politely.

“Good morning… I-I’m here to report.” Then, Bai Chí timidly called Bai Yutang, “C… Captain… B-Bai…”

His reaction amused Bai Yutang—this kid really doesn’t look like a Bai. “All done with the necessary paperwork?”

“Mhm.” Bai Chí nodded.

“This table is free.” Jiang Ping enthusiastically started clearing up the space beside him. “Since we’re both desk-bound staff, let’s be neighbours.”

“S-Sure.” Bai Chí replied as he walked over happily with his box; Zhan Zhao could almost see a tail gleefully wagging away behind him.

Zhan Zhao shook his head to drive away those nonsensical thoughts before asking with a smile, “You superiors aren’t angry at us for stealing you away, are they?”

“Nope~~” Bai Chí blushed and lowered his head. They were this close to popping the champagne to celebrate my departure because they always said that being on duty with me is life-threatening. It’s why I was even patrolling alone that day because everyone avoided me…

“W-What should I d-do, C-Captain?” Bai Chí plucked up the courage to ask Bai Yutang.

Bai Yutang shrugged in response. “Just go around and familiarise yourself, and find what you can do in the fastest time possible.”

“Also,” Bai Yutang said while patting Bai Chí on the shoulder, “just call me Ge. I haven’t been an older brother yet since I was born.” He sent a glare Zhan Zhao’s way before adding, “I’ve been calling other people Ge all this while.”

“Hehe,” Zhan Zhao chuckled as he said to Bai Chí, “Don’t be so tense, relax a little, you can call everyone here Ge.”

“Mhm!” Bai Chí bobbed his head up and down ecstatically.

Both Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao felt like they could see a tail wagging even more enthusiastically behind Bai Chí and shook their head again. What’s wrong with me today? I keep seeing things…

“Xiao Bai, Xiao Zhan.” A knock could be heard from the door as Lu Fang who was in charge of liaison walked in and said, “Someone’s looking for you.”

When the two of them looked towards Lu Fang, they saw a well-dressed woman standing behind him. She was not of Asian descent, had a head of silver hair, looked to be in her fifties, and appeared elegant and dignified.

“Can I help you?” Bai Yutang asked.

That lady looked at Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang like she was sizing them up before opening her mouth, “Are you Dr. Zhan and Officer Bai?”

The two nodded their head and searched through their memories for a bit—they can say for sure that they didn’t know this lady.

“This is Ms. Laura, Dr. Wilson’s wife.” Lu Fang introduced.

A hint of surprise flashed across the faces of Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang.

“Dr. Wilson said he’d like to see you and that he has some leads regarding the case to offer. Could you guys take a trip with me down to the hospital?”

Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang immediately followed this lady to an upscale private hospice.

“Hai! Zhan!!” Dr. Wilson leaned back on the sofa with his pipe in his mouth, still very lively.

“Oh~~ Officer Bai, you’re my lifesaver!”

Looking at the Dr. Wilson who had a healthy glow on his face and even gained a whole float tube of fat around his waist, Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang exchanged a look as they thought to themselves internally: Where’s the sick in this foreigner??

“Dr. Wilson, why are you smoking again? You better be careful, else you get scolded by the nurses~~” someone said with a smile while walking into the room.

When Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang turned around to look, the owner of that voice was that Hollywood star they had met on the day of the Banquet, Jon King.

“Haha, no worries, Jon. Come over quick, this is the benefactor who saved our lives.” Dr. Wilson called him over; it was clear to see that the two were well-acquainted with one another.

Jon politely exchanged handshakes with Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang while greeting them with a simple “hello”. When he shook hands with Zhan Zhao, Jon gave the latter’s palm a light squeeze; a faint smile on his face. Zhan Zhao was slightly weirded out by that while the brows of Bai Yutang who was standing beside him were already wrinkled. Zhan Zhao hastily stopped the murderous-looking Bai Yutang before asking Dr. Wilson with a smile, “Dr. Wilson, you said you had some leads relating to the case to provide us?”

Zhan Zhao pushed Bai Yutang and frowned at him—Don’t make a fuss, we have important business at hand!

While Bai Yutang scowled back at him—If it wasn’t because we have proper matters to settle, I would’ve beaten him till all his teeth fell out!!

But when he lifted his head angrily, he saw Jon King smiling at him meaningfully.

Boom!
Zhan Zhao pinched Bai Yutang as hard as he could, sending a shock of pain through the latter’s arm.

Glare: Damn Cat! What’d you do that for?
Glare: No fighting!
Rolls eyes: That brat is asking for it!
Side-eye: Violent Mouse!
Eyes red with anger: He molested you!
Glowering: What proof do you have??
Indignant glare: Hmph!!
Blinking: There, there~~

“I wanted to show you these.” Completely oblivious to the fight that Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao just had with only their eyes, Dr. Wilson took out two envelopes and placed them on the table.

“This is…” Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang both received the envelopes and opened them; inside each contained a stack of photos and a card.

In the first envelope were photos of Qi Lei—half of it was the youthful teen playing the bass guitar during the day, and the other was the forbidding appearance of him holding a sniper rifle at night… In the other envelope were Yang Feng’s pictures—half of it was a studious student holding a textbook and the other half was his bloodthirsty expression while slashing people in the night… The content of the card in both envelopes was the same. It was a black card that had four words written in blood red on the front—Child of the devil—and on the back of it was an image of a devil holding a scythe as well as the English words, Killer Training Camp.

Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang were utterly dumbfounded by this and they asked in unison, “When did this arrive?”

The smile on Wilson’s face also faltered, replaced by a concerned expression as he responded, “It appeared at the door to my room this morning.”

The letter was completely blank; no name, no address.

Bai Yutang looked at Wilson, confused. “What’s the meaning of these photos? Why were they sent to you?”

Wilson nodded at Bai Yutang and said, “Dearest Officer Bai, you aren’t a student of psychology so it’s no wonder that you won’t understand, but Zhan, you do, don’t you?”

Surprised, Bai Yutang turned to look at Zhan Zhao and was greeted with the sight of the other with his brows slightly furrowed and a worried expression on his face before he said slowly, “Dissociative identity disorder.”

Wilson picked up his pipe and took two puffs, nodding his head in satisfaction. “That’s right.”

Seeing that Bai Yutang was still confused, Wilson explained patiently, “My most famous work on psychology is《Creating Another Self》. Simply put, I have devoted my life to studying human personality and the motivations for their behaviour. There is some debate when it comes to Dissociative identity disorder and there are two main schools of thought—symbiosis and parasitism. What is meant by symbiosis is that the different personalities are equal, with two or more personalities that split occupying a body together. Parasitism, on the other hand, is the idea that the different personalities are derivative and live off the original.”

He took another puff before continuing, “However, my thesis is separate from these two schools of thought. I believe that split personalities do not exist at all.”

“Don’t exist?” Bai Yutang looked at Zhan Zhao.

Zhan Zhao nodded and added, “Dr. Wilson’s theory once caused a heated debate in the field of psychology. He believes that all these split personalities are actually just a form of delusion; illusions created by the brain based on a person's different motivations.”

“That’s right.” Wilson got to his feet and walked to the window. “I firmly deny the argument that split personalities are innate, that split personalities do not exist.”

Seeming to understand what was going on, Bai Yutang questioned, “So these letters… they are to refute your theory?”

Wilson nodded in approval. “I believe so…”

Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao exchanged yet another glance, they both had the same thought in mind: Something is fishy!

“I don’t have that many years left to live. Money, fame, and what not; I’ve already enjoyed all of these. I used to be glad to see people arguing over my theories in the past, but now, I just find it all extremely stupid… If innocent lives were taken just to refute my theory, I don’t know how I’m going to live with this guilt weighing on me1…” Wilson paused before turning around to look at Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang. “I’ve decided to help you guys lure that person out.”

“Lure?” Zhan Zhao was puzzled and Bai Yutang also looked at him with similar confusion. “What do you plan on doing?”

“Dr. Wilson plans on holding a dinner party to celebrate his recovery,” Jon King who was standing on the side suddenly said, “All the people invited are people from the field of psychology.”

Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang were taken aback.

“I don’t think this is a wise decision!” Bai Yutang frowned. “The risk is too great and you could very well be attacked again!”

“I’ve said before that I don’t really care for my life.” Wilson shook his head stubbornly. “I’m inviting the two of you to the party tonight,” he said that while handing them two invitations.

“The party will carry on as planned whether or not the two of you attend,” Wilson said, “I just hope that the two of you will be able to find the suspect by then.”

Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang were speechless. This old man wasn’t looking for advice at all, but rather, was giving out orders… How could he play with his life like that at this age? He’s too reckless.

They left the hospice with a mind full of questions and when Bai Yutang opened the car door, he said, “I say, Kitty, there really is something very weird with this lead.”

“Mhm,” Zhan Zhao concurred, “but this is an opportunity. Given how arrogant that organisation has been, they will definitely attend this party.”

“By the way,” Bai Yutang asked Zhan Zhao rather curiously while starting the car, “Didn't you also study something about split personalities for a while? Which school of thought do you follow?”

“None of it.” Zhan Zhao chuckled, “If I have the time to argue over things like this, I might as well study how to treat it, isn’t that more useful?”

“Haha~~” Bai Yutang nodded, “That makes sense! As expected, Cat is a cat!”

“What you’re saying is totally illogical!”
“What part?”
“Whether or not it makes sense has nothing to do with being a cat!”
“It’s not like I said that you made sense because you’re a cat!”
“Then what do you mean?”
“What I mean is that because you make sense, that’s why you’re a cat!”
“Because you make sense, that’s why you’re a cat… How’s that any different from ‘you make sense because you’re a cat’?”
“Of course there is a difference!”
“Where!”
“One has the cat in front while the other has the cat at the back!”

“Why did you stop talking?”
“Damn Mouse!”
“What?”
“It’s because you’re a damn Mouse, that’s why I stopped talking!!”
“… Stinky Cat! You’re copying me!!”

Dididididididididi~~~~~

Bai Yutang put the phone on loudspeaker. “What’s the matter, Wang Chao?”

“Captain! Jia Zhengyan is dead!”

“What?” The two of them exclaimed at the same time. “How did he die?”

“We aren’t very clear yet, but the initial deduction is that he committed suicide by taking drugs.”

“We'll be right back.” Bai Yutang hung up the phone and picked up the speed, driving towards the police station as fast as he could.

At the S.C.I. Office.
Zhang Long and Wang Chao had finished reporting the details of the case to Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao.

“What kind of drug is this?” Bai Yutang picked up the back with coloured pills in them and carefully scrutinised them. The base colour of the pill was yellow with streaks of coloured swirls all over it.

“We’ll have to wait for the test results to know for sure,” Zhang Long answered. “It’s just weird why that fellow would go to a public toilet to commit suicide.”

“M-May I have a look at it?” Bai Chí said suddenly.

Wang Chao passed the medicine to him. After taking a look at it, Bai Chí said, “It’s a painkiller.”

“Painkiller?” Bai Yutang asked curiously, “Why does it look so strange?”

Bai Chí said, “This is a special painkiller for children. After my surgery last year… uh… after it…”

Bai Chí’s voice trailed off because everyone was looking at him with a big smile on their face.

“You’re saying that after your surgery last year, the doctor prescribed children’s painkillers to you?” Wang Chao asked Bai Chí in amusement, “What kind of surgery did you have?”

“…” Bai Chí blushed and whispered, “Intu…Intussusception2~~~”

…Everyone fell silent and looked at each other before bursting into a fit of laughter—a children’s disease!

“That’s not the main point~~” Bai Chí mumbled under his breath.

“Ahem~” Bai Yutang cleared his throat to get everyone to bring their attention back onto the case.

“Why did Jia Zhengyan run into a public restroom to eat children’s painkillers?” Jiang Ping wondered.

Just then, the door to the office was pushed open and in came Zhao Hu massaging his sore neck. “Goddammit, that lass pisses me off.”

The crowd turned their faces to look at him.

“What are you guys doing?” Seeing that everyone was gathered in the conference room, he immediately rushed in asking, all interested. “Was there some progress?”

Then, he quickly saw the bag of pills on the table. “What’s this medicine doing here as well?”

“What?” Bai Yutang was stunned momentarily. “You’ve seen this medicine?”

Zhan Hu took out two pills wrapped in tissue from his pocket. “I have some right here.”

“Where did you get this?” Wang Chao exclaimed.

Seeing everyone look at him with wide eyes, Zhao Hu looked at Bai Yutang cautiously. “Captain, are you guys playing some kind of trick on me again? I definitely won't fall for it this time!!”
(lilies: ahahah this poor baby)

What he got in response was a smack on the back of his head by Zhang Long. “We’re talking serious matters here!!”

“Qi Le wanted to take these just now.” Zhao Hu rubbed the back of his head. “This girl named Chen Yu gave it to her.”

“What’s Qi Le taking painkillers for?” Wang Chao wondered.

“I get it,” Zhan Zhao said, “Painkillers contain a certain amount of morphine in them; taking them in large quantities can easily cause hallucinations in people.”

Bai Yutang knitted his brows together. “Qi Le is using painkillers as a substitute for drugs?”

“It probably can’t work as a complete substitute.” Zhan Zhao shook his head. “But it can slow the effects of withdrawal… It’s just that taking too much of it will likely kill you.”

“That’s why she used children’s painkillers instead so the strength of the drug would be lower and an accidental overdose won’t be as dangerous?” Bai Yutang examined the coloured pills in the bag. “Jia Zhengyan went to the public restroom to take the painkillers to slightly relieve the withdrawal from his drug addiction.”

“So he died from an overdose?” Jiang Ping asked.

“We’ll just have to conduct an autopsy on the body and test for the composition of the drug to know,” Wang Chao answered, “The question is…”

Everyone in the team turned to look at Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao. “Where is Gongsun?”

The two of them were slightly taken aback before they glanced at each other and blurted at the same time, “Sick/I don’t know.”

They exchanged another glance and said, “I don’t know/He’s sick.”

Glare~~~

Their answers left everyone bewildered.

Bai Yutang cleared his throat and said, “Gongsun asked for a leave, go look for another medical examiner.”

This only made everyone even more curious~~~

Thick nylon curtains completely blocked the bright sunlight from entering into the room, the warm light shining from the bedside made the person curled up on the bed appear especially fragile. Bai Jintang didn’t know how warm it was under the covers, but the messy hair and pale complexion made Gongsun seem a little cold.

Bai Jintang turned up the temperature in the room, for some reason he thought Gongsun might be cold.

His actions were definitely a bit too much last night… Bai Jintang, who never knew what self-reflection was, sat on the sofa in the corner of the room with a glass of wine in his hand, feeling like something was weighing on his chest. He did get what he wanted last night, but after he woke up, he’d rather Gongsun stabbed him a few times with a scalpel as long as he didn’t get angry…

The person on the bed began to stir.
Bai Jintang immediately tensed up—he’s awake.

Gongsun slowly opened his eyes, gradually becoming awake as he looked at the dimly lit room in front of him while Bai Jintang stayed hidden in a dark corner of the room without making a sound.

After staring blankly into space for about half a minute, Gongsun propped himself up on the bed with his hands and tried to sit up.

“…Hmm…”

It’s just that such a simple action was simply impossible for the current him to complete; he could barely feel his body from waist down while his entire body felt like it was coming apart… Thinking back to last night, he couldn’t really remember the specifics but he knew that after he lost consciousness in the car, the next thing he saw after waking up was this bed. And then, Bai Jintang… again…

“How are you feeling?”

The sudden voice startled Gongsun. When he raised his head, he saw that Bai Jintang had, at some point, moved to stand in front of him.

Gong Sun stared at the person in front of him, his expression was surprisingly calm.

Bai Jintang felt a little anxious from being Gongsun’s gaze and said, “I…”

Gong Sun looked at him before speaking slowly, his voice a little hoarse, “You should know that I don’t actually hate you.”

Bai Jintang was slightly shocked as he looked at Gongsun with rounded eyes.

“I feel very safe whenever I’m with you… and ever since you moved in next door, I slept well every night.”

“Gongsun…” Bai Jintang reached out a hand, he wanted to touch Gongsun’s cheek but was avoided by the latter. Gongsun turned away from him and started muttering to himself, “But now, I’m afraid of you.”

Bai Jintang was beginning to panic when he heard Gongsun continue, “I will never forgive you for what you did to me.”

Lifting his head, Gongsun said coldly, “You saved my life; consider last night my repayment to you. From now on, I don’t want to see you again.”

“Gongsun…” Bai Jintang wanted to grab his trembling shoulders but stopped short at the icy look on Gongsun’s face.

“Touch me again; you'll be waiting to collect my corpse.” Gongsun struggled to get up to look for his clothes.

“You… lie down a little longer…” Seeing Gongsun’s strained movements, for once, Bai Jintang was actually at a loss for what to do.

He calmed himself down before pushing Gongsun back onto the bed. Due to his actions, Gongsun collapsed onto the bed and couldn't move at all.

Bai Jintang tucked him in before getting up and saying, “Lie down for a while longer, I'll go out!”

Then, he turned to leave the room. When he opened the door, Bai Jintang said in a low voice with his back to Gongsun, “I shouldn’t have forced you but I don’t regret it… I just know that I like you… I’m sorry that I don't know how to love.”

He looked back at Gongsun with some melancholy in his eyes. “No one taught me how, or perhaps, I knew but later forgot…”

The door clicked shut and everything fell silent.

Gongsun lay on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. Bai Jintang, why couldn’t you wait a little longer…

“Are all psychologists very rich?” Bai Yutang looked at the magnificent villa in front of him, and asked Zhan Zhao beside him.

Zhan Zhao gave a rather irrelevant answer, “To each his own, I guess.”

The two were led by the waiter into the villa's garden where they saw Wilson happily chatting with his guests, looking the same as usual.

“Dr. Zhan, we meet again!”

Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang looked at Pang Yu who appeared behind them with some surprise—he’s a big fish—and standing beside him was Jon King. Bai Yutang just felt like punching him the moment he saw that faint smirk on Jon King’s face.

“Yutang, I want a drink.” Zhan Zhao gave Bai Yutang a look that meant Get Jon out of here, I want to speak to Pang Yu alone.

And just so happened, Jon spoke up before Bai Yutang even said anything, “The drinks are over there; I’ll bring you over.”

Shrugging indifferently, Bai Yutang gave Zhan Zhao a look that read “be careful” before leaving with Jon.

Pang Yu took a sip of the champagne in his hand as he sent a meaningful glance at Jon and Bai Yutang who walked through the crowd, disappearing into the far end of the garden before chuckling a little.

“…?” Zhan Zhao looked at him confused.

“Is it alright for your friend to go with him?” Pang Yu asked out of nowhere.

“…What’s not alright about that?” Zhan Zhao asked in turn, somewhat stunned by his question. “Aren’t they just going to get some drinks?”

“Keke…” Pang Yu laughed while pointing in the opposite direction, “I think the drinks are supposed to be on that side.”

“They wh…” Zhan Zhao was a little puzzled.

Pang Yu leaned in and whispered, “As far as I know, your friend is Jon’s favourite type…”

Zhan Zhao froze for a moment, his face immediately changed and he turned around to chase after them. Pang Yu laughed and continued sipping on his champagne, his gaze falling on Wilson in the crowd as his lips curled into a sneer.

Bai Yutang followed Jon to a secluded corner of the garden; no one else could be seen around them.

“There doesn't seem to be anything that could be called a drink here.” Bai Yutang observed while looking around.

Jon took a step closer and locked eyes with Bai Yu Tang.

“I haven’t had the chance to thank you yet after you saved me that day.”

Bai Yutang thought he was being a little strange. “I’m not the one who saved you.”

“Ke…” Jon smiled and reached out, gently touching Bai Yutang's chin as he leaned in. “You’re so cute~~~”

By the time Bai Yutang finally reacted to what was happening, Jon had already moved in, seemingly wanting to kiss him. It gave him such a big shock all the hair on his body stood up. Just when he was about to kick the other man into oblivion, a figure flew in from the corner of his eyes and lunged over, fiercely kicking Jon away.

“Ow~~~” Jon fell onto the ground from the sudden force, grunting in pain as he rubbed his back.

Zhan Zhao stood there, giving him the death glare while huffing angrily. He grabbed Bai Yutang and turned to leave.

“Why didn’t you punch him??” Zhan Zhao continued huffing furiously and waved his fists around. “You should’ve given him a good thrashing till his teeth fell out; till he can never be a man again3!!”
(lilies: should be indignantly according to the raws but I think the author just wanted to show that Kitty was angry)

“Kitty,” Bai Yutang called out to him from behind somewhat incredulously, “Are you jealous?”

“What?!” Zhan Zhao’s face was red as a tomato. “Aren’t you a Chinese Kickboxing Champion?? Why didn’t you hit him when he tried to eat your tofu4?”

Seeing the sour look on Zhan Zhao’s face, Bai Yutang laughed so hard that he couldn't even close his mouth, “Well isn’t it because I didn’t get the chance to do it when you already pounced on him like a vicious wolf.”

“Hmph!” Zhan Zhao scowled at the White Mouse who was grinning from ear to ear.

He threw aside Bai Yutang’s hand and walked towards the garden, cursing under his breath, “Damn Mouse! You’ve got peach blossoms in your eyes, attracting all the butterflies and the bees—always seducing people5!!”

Meanwhile, the Mouse followed behind him, wagging his tail gleefully.

1. Written as “罪孽深重” means that someone is very sinful/has a lot of sins
2. Intussusception is a serious condition which often blocks food or fluid from passing through, cutting off the blood supply to the part of the intestine that's affected. This can lead to a tear in the bowel (perforation), infection and death of bowel tissue. Intussusception is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in children younger than 3 years old. This condition is rare in adults (if present, it’s usually due to a tumour). (from mayo clinic)
3. Written as “不能人道” generally means that someone is impotent
4. Generally means they are taking advantage of someone, often with a sexual implication. I directly translated it cos it’s cute ahaahah
5. Written as “招蜂引蝶,拈花惹草” the first part means that someone is attractive to the opposite sex and apparently also has the meaning of someone who’s already in a relationship flirting and attracting other people (wink wonk) The second part means to fool around (with women)
And then for my own understanding. Both parts have to some extent kinda a sexual innuendo with reference to pollination (birds and the bees?)

Please feedback to me in the comments below if you find any typos or terrible grammar, etc that you think I should change. Or maybe you think my interpretation is completely off lol Help me help you have a better reading experience ahahah what a tongue twister XD
