Chapter 6 Loop 2-2
Petra seemed to be a talkative soul to begin with as she introduced
everything about the castle on their way to the master bedroom.
「There are three buildings that make up the castle and although they all
have the same appearance, each building was built at different times.
Therefore, there were some design issues. The West Wing, where we are now,
is only connected to the Central Wing on the first and second floors. So
to get to the Central Building, you’ll have to go down the stairs from the
third floor, which is a bit of a hassle.」
「Hmm〜」
I didn’t register much of Petra’s chatter. Even if that was just a dream,
the raw sensation of being attacked was still very much vivid in my mind.
I kept my guard on as I followed behind Petra, for fear that another sword
would fly at me from the darkness.
And Petra being Petra was completely oblivious to my actions as she
rambled on without a care.
「The Central Wing where the master bedroom is located is the oldest
building in history and all but the first floor of the building is the
private space for His Grace and his family. Having said that, most of the
rooms are vacant as there’s only His Grace and Lady Serenia… Ah! We did
also properly prepare a room for Madam in the Central Building, near the
master bedroom! However, there was a fire a few days ago.」
Petra hurriedly waved her hands in a panic as she tried to explain.
Ah… She might have thought I was wondering why there was no room for
me——the wife of the Duke——in the private area for the family. Actually, I didn’t notice it
until she mentioned it——or rather, I’m more interested in the fact that there was such a
dangerous incident like a fire.
「There was a fire? Isn't that quite a big deal?」
「Thankfully, the room that was prepared for Madam was only burnt
slightly. However, Butler Faro said that it would be better to use a guest
room in the West Wing as a temporary room for the Madam as there would be
repairmen going in and out of the room doing repair works.」
「Ah, I see… What was the cause of the fire?」
「I’m not sure. It was said to have been caused by carelessness in
managing the fire, but the servants who tended the room said that that was
not the case…」
Which was to say she didn’t know the reason, huh.
This story made me a little uneasy. I couldn’t help but feel jittery
hearing about a fire after having such an ominous dream. I continued on my
way despite the restlessness I felt inside, and I finally arrived at my
destination.
「This is the master bedroom; please enter.」
Before me stood hefty mahogany doors. The doors had a slightly glossy
surface, making it conspicuous in spite of the dimly lit corridor.
——I knew this door.
My hands trembled from a sense of déjà vu the sight of the door gave me
and when I put a hand on the doorknob, I felt the familiar coldness of the
knob against my skin.
The heat of being stabbed in my chest and abdomen seemed to rush forth and
hit me all at once.
「…Madam?」
Petra peered at my face since it appeared like I seem to have no intention
of opening the door.
If that’s the case, wouldn’t I just become a completely suspicious person?
I don’t want to be thought of as a strange woman who first clung onto the
pillar and now stood still in front of the bedroom door.
And besides, I came here to get some confirmation so I should at least
have a look inside; I’d be a disgrace to the Baltic name if I back out
now.
——Was what I told myself as I pushed the door open with great
force.
However, I was still afraid to step inside, so I only peeked my head
through the gap I opened.
「Is anyone there…?」
There was no reply to my call.
I looked around to carefully observe if there were any suspicious figures.
The room was utterly quiet.
Moonlight shining into the darkness of the room——it was the exact same dream as in my dream.
…That terribly oversized bed looked familiar too.
「Your Grace! Are you there—? Your—Grace—Duke—Crusseld—」
This time, I tried calling him in a loud voice but there was still no
answer, so I closed the door.
「Mhm, the Duke isn’t in.」
「E-Eh—but…」
「Even if he were asleep, there’s no way he wouldn’t wake up to my voice.
I am quite confident in my voice; after all, Father often scolded me,
telling me to keep quiet, and that I was so loud I could be heard across
the mountain.」
(lilies: ohmytian what do we do with you ahahah)
「…」
Petra was at a loss for words.
「Alright, retreat. Let’s go back to my room, it’s cold.」
(lilies: ahahah she does literally say retreat as if she’s some
military man XD)
I just blurted out my piece and quickly walked away from the door.
My legs had almost turned to jelly from fear; my heart was pounding
loudly.
I wanted to think of it as a dream or hallucination, but this was
definitely no hallucination.
That room was dangerous. Anyway, I have to get out from there.
Just then, I realised that I was just heading straight down the corridor,
not knowing where I was going; I turned around to see Petra running after
me.
When Petra finally caught up to me, she bent over with her hands on her
knees as she breathed heavily.
「Please wait… Madam…」
「S-Sorry.」
「I thought you were going to leave me behind and run away when you
suddenly walked away so quickly…」
Although I really wanted to get away as soon as possible, I waited for
Petra to catch her breath.
After a while, Petra finally lifted her head.
「Where did… His Grace go?」
「I wonder that too, but since neither of us knows his whereabouts, it
can’t be helped.」
「Butler Faro might know.」
But I don’t really want to know; I just want to go back to my room and
burrow into the covers.
I’m sure that with a good night’s sleep, I’ll soon forget about this
eerie experience——probably.
「At any rate, let’s go back to the room first, then we’ll think about
what to do.」
「Hmm…」Petra nodded her head after contemplating for a bit.
And with that, I could finally return post-haste to my room.
