However, the chairman naturally had his own plans.
If Kris and Dishang Huai were to stay engaged, with a fiancé in tow, how would
Kris be able to develop feelings for and get together with his talented, and
handsome grandson, who had a promising future?
Another thing was that he had an old grudge against Dishang Huai's
great-grandfather. Back when he was still just an ordinary high-level mage,
Dishang’s great-grandfather was already a Grand Mage, a pillar that upheld the
great Olay Empire. The humiliation he suffered then was something he could
never forget for the rest of his life. Now that the great-grandson of that old
man was nothing but a piece of trash, naturally, he wasn't going to miss this
opportunity to ruin his engagement with the princess.
He would show Dishang Huai just how weak and powerless he truly was, just as
he had been back then, casually trampled upon by others.
He pretentiously took a sip of his tea before saying coolly, "I only have one
condition; and I'll be straight with you, I have an old grudge with Old
Dishang[1]. If the princess wants to join my Holy Order, she’ll have to break
off the engagement with Dishang Huai!"
Seeing the people present wavering at his words, he slowly threw out another
tempting offer: "Of course, once the princess becomes a disciple of the order,
I’ll personally ensure that the curse on her is completely lifted."
The Emperor, Empress, and others had all witnessed firsthand how easily the
chairman suppressed the curse plaguing Kris with just a flick of his wrist, so
they naturally believed in his words. Even the High Priest, despite still
having some doubts, when it came to the princess's life, nothing else
mattered.
Kris frowned and lifted her chin haughtily, "I don’t care. I’m not breaking
off the engagement."
Although it really hurt when the curse acted up, Kris was still frozen beneath
the ice lake when the author stopped updating—she hadn’t actually died. Given
how powerful the plot was, he didn't believe that curse or whatnot could
really kill him. But breaking off the engagement would be a real death
sentence.
Just like a series of dominoes, if he couldn't guard this piece from falling
well, the next dominoes would fall uncontrollably. However, the pressure
exerted on this piece of domino was increasing by the second.
One end was the life of his son, and on the other was this whatever fiancé of
the princess whom he didn't like in the first place—it was evident which was
more important of the two.
The Emperor snapped at him, "Kris, now isn’t the time to be wilful."
The chairman also slowly turned to look at Kris. "Your Royal Highness, this is
your life that's at stake here. I urge you to think it through carefully."
Ding Sheng pouted, but stubbornly turned his head away, showing his refusal to
communicate. "I'm not doing it!"
Standing at the side, Dishang Huai watched the princess' proud and obstinate
figure and silently lowered his head.
Truly, the little princess was as headstrong and wilful as ever. His heart
felt like it was being squeezed, aching and softening into a tender mess.
The fact was, there was nothing to hesitate when it came to this kind of
thing.
With everyone watching, Dishang Huai suddenly stepped into the centre of the
hall. "I'm willing to end the engagement."
Ding Sheng wanted to scream, but Stuart, who was beside him, quickly clamped a
hand over his mouth.
Dishang Huai didn't even glance his way.
He knelt on one knee, with his right index and middle fingers pressed against
his temple and looked up at the ceiling.
Word by word, he said, "I, Dishang
Huai, willingly annul my engagement with Kris of the Olay Empire. From this
day forward, we shall part ways, never to be connected again."
Then, he stood up, without taking another look at anyone, he turned around and
left.
Ding Sheng could've never expected such a crazy turn of events. He just felt
as if a thunderous crash exploded in his mind, making his head tingle.
This piece of domino still fell in the end; his engagement with the
protagonist still got broken off.
Although this time it was the protagonist who took the initiative.
Distraught, as if his soul had left his body, Ding Sheng shouted at the
protagonist's upright back through gritted teeth from the main hall, "Dishang
Huai, how could you be so useless!"
Just go and have a look around, which shounen male lead would hand over his
fiancée like that?! Is this how it is? Despite all my efforts, I'm still stuck
as a cannon fodder, unable to be promoted to a female supporting character?!
I’d settle for being a male supporting character and being your sidekick! I'm
not picky!
Standing at the foot of the grand staircase below the main hall, the young man
slowly turned around, meeting the princess’s brilliant violet eyes, to look at
his princess one last time.
He said with a smile, "Your Highness, haven't you always known best, just how
useless I am?"
And with that, he turned around quietly.
This time, he kept walking down, never stopping or looking back.
The gears of the plot were rolling forward in the established direction. Even
if there were deviations in the details, there was nothing anyone could do to
stop them.
Dishang Huai had left the Olay Empire.
1. Written as "帝商老爷子" and "老爷子"
is used rudely or humorously to address an old man. Naturally, he won't be
referring to Dishang Huai's great-grandfather as "Grandfather Dishang" lmaoo↩
