ARBE Chapter 8

Chapter 8

As the woman who ruthlessly humiliated the protagonist and motivated him to embark on a path of hard work and self-improvement, following the typical plot of an engagement-breakup trope, Kris naturally would not be too weak. She would definitely possess talents and abilities far above the average person, though not comparable with the protagonist.

In this world, customs vary across different countries. In some nations, women have inheritance rights and can ascend to the throne; one of the members of the protagonist's harem was a queen of one such empire. However, in the Olay Empire, princesses do not have inheritance rights. But now that Kris was actually a boy, it's only natural that he was being groomed as an heir to the throne, receiving rigorous education and training, everything necessary for a future monarch.

This was quite a predicament for Ding Sheng. Although he didn't have much of an issue with casting low-level magic, his understanding of the theories behind them was a struggle. The worst part of it all was that his drawing ability was extremely weak; drawing those complex magic circles would be the death of him.

At this rate, he fears he might die before being sealed under the ice lake by Dishang Huai.

Thus, what started as an excuse, asking Dishang Huai for help to search for magic, quickly turned into a genuine need.

Although the current Dishang Huai was trash in actual combat, he was a true expert when it came to theory, drawing all kinds of magic circles beautifully and accurately, making Ding Sheng extremely envious.

In order to solidify the news that he had high hopes for Dishang Huai's potential and his stance of not wanting to annul their engagement, and also to catch up on his studies… These days, Ding Sheng would frequent the library whenever he had the time, almost as if he intended to reside there permanently.

Holding a quill in his hand, Ding Sheng diligently scribbled on a piece of magical parchment. Seeing yet another magic circle fail, he could not help but sigh and leaned back into the magical beast leather seat, anxiety and frustration evident in his beautiful violet eyes.

The exam is in two days, and the proud princess has always ranked among the top. If his grades plummet, it would certainly raise suspicions.

Dishang Huai walked towards him quietly while carrying a stack of books that might be useful. He casually picked up the papers Ding Sheng had discarded. Then, he reached out and grasped Ding Sheng's hand, which was holding the pen.

Startled, Ding Sheng turned to look at Dishang Huai in surprise.

Dishang Huai lowered his gaze and was about to withdraw his hand. Despite the relatively pleasant interactions these past few days with the princess, his future wife in name, how could he forget just how much she despised him.

A long time ago, in his naive and innocent youth, he too, once felt his heart pound for such a noble and attractive fiancé who was the envy of all and perfect in every way. However, reality had long since shattered those illusions. Through all the humiliation he suffered, his feelings for Kris had all turned into disdain and resentment. He'd rather this engagement never existed in the first place. Now he has learned not to harbour any unrealistic fantasies and to rely solely on himself. So what if he was a loser? One day, he would definitely achieve his goals.

These days, he seemed to be too mesmerised by the princess's seemingly innocent and childish facade; he almost forgot her true nature. This temperamental princess absolutely hated others getting into her personal space, especially if it was her disgraceful fiancé. Shaking his head self-deprecatingly, Dishang Huai was ready to put down his hand and leave.

But Ding Sheng, realising the situation, turned back and allowed Dishang Huai to guide his hand with the pen as if nothing happened.

It would be too obvious to withdraw his hand now, and it might even anger Kris again. Dishang Huai was surprised, but he carefully held his fiancé's hand and meticulously guided it to trace out the magic circle from the book in front of them.

It was a third-tier wind-type magic circle. Something of this level was simply too easy for Dishang Huai; he had long committed it to heart and could draw it even with his eyes closed without referring to the diagrams in the book. One has to know that in the early sections of "Other World Royal Odyssey", when the awakening of the protagonist's bloodline was still incomplete and he had insufficient magical power, the protagonist often relied on bottled magical power, combined with powerful magic circles to defeat opponents who were several times more powerful than himself.

Therefore, at this time, he could actually spare most of his attention to secretly observing the princess seated before him.

To make it more conducive for reading and writing, Kris used a flower garland to trap her long, lush hair behind her back. She wore a simple mage's robe—compared to complicated and elaborate princess gowns, Ding Sheng obviously preferred simple clothing and thus, wore the mage's robes whenever he could.

Her beautiful eyes focused intently on the magic circle she was drawing underneath her pen, her breath shaking slightly as a perfect magic circle was about to come into shape. Her amethyst-like eyes shimmered with pure joy—after all, this would be the first magic circle she successfully completed, even if it was with the help of Dishang Huai guiding her hand.

Dishang Huai could feel his own breath trembling along with the princess'.

He couldn't help himself from leaning down slightly, whispering into Ding Sheng's ear with a soft chuckle, "Who knew the all-capable princess could be so clumsy?"

The warm breath tickled her ear, and the intimate gesture bordered on flirtation.

Ding Sheng was startled; he turned to glare daggers at Dishang Huai before running off.

Dishang Huai was once again doused with the ice water mixture.

With a wry smile, he lifted his sleeve to wipe his face as he chided himself for acting crazy. How could he talk like that? If he had angered Her Highness, who knew how she would act in retaliation?

Before he could wipe his face clean, he saw Her Highness running back again, hurriedly carrying away the books he had brought to her and the freshly drawn magic circle. Then, she ran off again without a glance at him.

Dishang Huai stood rooted in place, feeling somewhat resigned as he mumbled under his breath, "Hey, you're supposed to register when borrowing books. You can't just break the rules like that because I'm a librarian…"

#On how a fiancé who is a librarian pulls strings for his fiancée who is a princess#
