AMTV Chapter 8

Chapter 8 - Going Home With You

For the next few days, Lin Quan was on high alert. He'd ask the System to do a little divination before taking every step and was highly wary of every visitor.
Lin Quan dared not let his guard down for even a moment; the calm before the storm was the most terrifying. He had to tread carefully. If something were to happen at this time, it would be truly unjust.

Out of consideration for the safety of his life, Lin Quan spent his days holed up in the ward, no longer wandering around. Occasionally, he would lean against the window to soak up the sun; life was extra carefree. He saw no one and answered no calls by using the same excuse that he was sleeping.

The Lin family had a weird hereditary condition; it wasn't uncommon for the heir to fall asleep and never wake up. Lin Quan didn't mind using this as an excuse to maintain distance from others.

In the blink of an eye, it was the day before Elder Qian was due to be discharged. Lin Quan paced around his room excitedly.

Lin Quan: Little Temtem, I'm so thrilled! I'm about to escape this hellhole and run towards a wonderful new life.
System: Congrats, host. Qian Gu has arrived; you are about to leave the sanatorium.

Lin Quan: He's coming today? Isn't Elder Qian being discharged tomorrow?
System: You really believe that? It's not tomorrow, it's today. We’re leaving a day early to avoid unnecessary trouble.
Lin Quan: …
Lin Quan: Pardon me, I'm dumb; I really believed it.

Ten minutes later, Qian Gu entered the ward and told Lin Quan, "Let's go now. Do you have any personal items to pack?"

Lin Quan showed his empty hands—since the start, the only thing he intended to bring was only himself. He happily followed beside Qian Gu, not even asking where Elder Qian was even though he didn't see the old man. If it wasn't his business, he couldn't be bothered to ask.
Lin Quan's cheerful mood lasted until they reached the entrance of the sanatorium, where his steps involuntarily faltered. At the same time he spotted the Qian family's black sedan, he also saw Ji Shang standing not far away.

Lin Quan: Little Temtem, I'm a bit scared!
System: Don't be scared, your travel fortune for today is good—small blessing. Just relax and walk forward; nothing will happen.

Lin Quan: Really?  Childhood Friend No. 6 won’t stop me or prevent me from leaving this place?
System: He won't stop you. He's here to see you off. Remember what he said a few days ago? He'll find a way to get you out quickly.
Lin Quan: Well, I mean I am getting out of this place, but I'm leaving with Qian Gu. Is that okay?
System: Yes. Childhood Friend No. 6 approached Qian Gu to discuss the matter and asked him to help out. This sanatorium doesn't belong to the Ji family, and there are too many people watching you. Things didn't go too well for No. 6 so Qian Gu took his place.

Lin Quan: Ahem, you mean Childhood Friend No. 6 specifically arranged this with Qian Gu, promising him something in return for taking me along?
System: Essentially, yes. However, things have deviated from Childhood Friend No. 6's plan. You're not going to the Ji family; you're going to the Qian family.
Lin Quan: Uh… Little Temtem, if Childhood Friend No. 6 finds out the truth and realises he’s been tricked, will he be overwhelmed by the shock and blacken on the spot? At that point, will he strangle Qian Gu first or me?

System: It's not exactly a trick. Qian Gu didn't agree to No. 6's plan. He’s taking you because that was his intention from the start.
System: Besides, in No. 6's eyes, his troublesome rival is Childhood Friend No. 7. Even if you cling to Qian Gu, everyone will think you're trying to ruin No. 7's marriage at all costs, refusing to accept his marriage to anyone else. If not Qian Gu, there could also be someone else. Your madness is for No. 7.
Lin Quan: …
Lin Quan: Everyone's imagination is really impressive; what a fascinating story! I'm at a loss for words.

Lin Quan wasn't about to get close to Ji Shang. He stayed glued to Qian Gu’s side. The moment he caught sight of Ji Shang, he gave a nod indifferently as a greeting.
The smile on Ji Shang's face was gentle to the extreme. His eyes twinkled with overflowing affection. He was like a hunter who had successfully brought his prey back to his den, happily contemplating where to take a bite.

Lin Quan shuddered under Ji Shang's gaze. He dared not make any unnecessary movements, for fear this fellow would go berserk. It was only after the car door closed and the sedan drove away did Lin Quan finally let out a long sigh of relief.
The partition between the front and back seats rose, leaving only Lin Quan and Qian Gu in the quiet space. Lin Quan’s stiff back relaxed a little, and he couldn't help but glance back. Only to see Ji Shang still standing there, watching them leave.

Lin Quan heard Qian Gu's low voice beside him, "Can't bear to leave?"

"No," Lin Quan replied with a smirk. "It's more like saying goodbye. Goodbye to that hell, that endless darkness."

That place had been the little Young Master Lin's personal hell. Trapped in the sanatorium, the young master of the Lin family sank into deeper slumber day by day, withering away with each passing day. His fortune swindled away and he died an excruciating death. Lin Quan didn't want to walk that path of no return; he wanted to live.

Lin Quan leaned forward, sticking closer to Qian Gu. "Thank you. For giving me the chance to say goodbye to hell."

"Aren't you afraid that this car might be taking you to another hell?" Qian Gu asked.

"Not at all," Lin Quan smiled, tilting his head. "If you dare to save me, I dare to go home with you. I'm not scared."

The living, breathing Lucky Lifesaver Charm was here, right in front of him. The hope the other party gave him was real, and his gratitude came from the heart.
When Lin Quan was trapped in the sanatorium, his emotions were always unstable. He wasn’t sure if these feelings came from him or from the little Young Master Lin's fears.  He felt anxious, afraid he might never escape the nightmare.

He held on tight to Qian Gu's hand, placing his hope on the man to help him escape the pain. But his doubts lingered, rooted in the uncertainty of not knowing what he would do without Qian Gu's support and Qian Gu didn't help him. Thankfully, Qian Gu did not let him down.

As his taut nerves relaxed, Lin Quan felt a wave of drowsiness wash over him. "How long until we get home?"

Home—it was both Qian Gu's home and the place where Lin Quan would live from now on. The current Lin family was a dire and dangerous place to be, so it likely would not be able to become Lin Quan's home.

"About an hour," Qian Gu replied, "Are you sleepy? Should I call the doctor?"

"It's fine, it's not an episode; I can tell the difference," Lin Quan said with a chuckle. "Don't worry, I’ll be awake by the time we get home."

Lin Quan leaned back against the car seat and quickly drifted off to sleep.
He had no idea how much time had passed or where the car was headed. Yet, he felt at ease, sleeping soundly.

As always, the system woke Lin Quan right on time. To his surprise, when he opened his eyes, he found a thin blanket draped over him. His Lucky Lifesaver Charm wasn't as cold and indifferent as he appeared.

Lin Quan tugged the blanket closer as he looked out the window. The streetlights had just flickered on, casting a warm glow that felt strangely cosy. He asked, "Are we home?"

"In a bit. You woke up right on time," Qian Gu said.

Lin Quan stretched lazily. He felt doubly refreshed after a nap. "Of course! It's my first day at my fiancé's house. I can't exactly call a doctor and be carried in. That's bad luck."

Soon, the black car pulled into a quiet and peaceful, upscale neighbourhood of villas.

Lin Quan: Little Temtem, this is Qian Gu's house? Has Elder Qian arrived or is he still on the way?
System: Host, you’re overthinking it. Elder Qian went back to the main family estate. This is where Qian Gu normally lives.

Lin Quan: Hahaha, my Lucky Lifesaver Charm really doesn't beat around the bush—he brought me straight to his place. Starting our cohabitation life even before greeting the elders—I like that. Daily kisses, cuddles, and sharing a bed… my HP is bound to skyrocket from 25 to 60, right?
System: Host, wake up! You're a wealthy heir with a system and family fortune. Can you not be so cheap? Isn't it better to wait for him to offer HP to you himself instead of throwing yourself at him?
Lin Quan: It's not! I desperately need HP; 25 is just pitiful.

Walking into the low-key yet luxurious villa, the first person Lin Quan saw was a slightly plump middle-aged woman in her fifties. She was the housekeeper, surnamed Zhang, whom everyone called Auntie Zhang.

She had looked after Qian Gu since he was young and had earned the Qian family's complete trust, wielding absolute authority over household matters. She was responsible for managing all aspects of Qian Gu's daily life. Apart from Auntie Zhang, there were only two or three other servants. Since there weren't many people, the place was naturally quiet.

Qian Gu introduced to Auntie Zhang, "Auntie Zhang, this is Lin Quan. He'll be staying here for a while."

Auntie Zhang said with a smile, "Young Master Lin, if you need anything, just let me know, I'll get it done as soon as possible."

"Please, Auntie Zhang, no need to be so formal. Just call me Ah Quan," Lin Quan pointed at himself. "I'm not picky with food and I can sleep anywhere; I'm really easy to take care of."

Hearing Lin Quan's words, Auntie Zhang's smile deepened. This good-looking young master spoke quite candidly. If she hadn't already known Lin Quan's background, she wouldn't have believed this was the new heir to the Lin family's vast fortune.

Allegedly, the young master of the Lin family had complicated ties with the young master of the Fu family, and his relationship with the young master of the Ji family was just as messy and hard to untangle. She had worried Lin Quan would have a bad temper and be difficult to serve. Who knew he'd be all smiles and surprisingly approachable?

Lin Quan's approachability was most evident during meals.

He had a massive appetite, enthusiastically devouring large pieces of meat and clearing plate after plate. All while praising Auntie Zhang, "This is absolutely delicious, Auntie Zhang! Your cooking is amazing!"

Auntie Zhang smiled, before glancing questioningly at the silently eating Qian Gu, a hint of confusion in her eyes.

Wasn't this kid staying in a high-end sanatorium? How bad was the food that he’s starving like this? To think the heir of the Lin family would be reduced to this state.
Moreover, hadn't Lin Quan been mooching off food and shelter in Elder Qian's ward recently? Even then, he still had a hard time? Just what kind of mistreatment had this poor boy been through?

Auntie Zhang gently advised, "Slow down a bit, or you'll choke."

Lin Quan nodded enthusiastically. "It's so good! As expected, food at home is way better than at that sanatorium. My attending physician was bought off. Forget eating in peace—I didn't even dare take a single one of the medications they prescribed to me. I knew it, nothing beats being home, after all."

Auntie Zhang: "…"
Qian Gu: "…"

While Qian Gu's home was indeed safe, the way Lin Quan was making himself right at home was quite impressive. Despite being so wary at the sanatorium, was he not worried that someone might be bribed here as well and he could be poisoned too?

Lin Quan's hearty appetite was so infectious that even Qian Gu ended up eating an extra bowl of rice that day. Auntie Zhang couldn't stop smiling.

However, the truth behind Lin Quan's appetite was…

Lin Quan: Little Temtem, I think I could eat another bowl.
System: Host, you've got to stop. Anymore and you'll end up in hospital. Give it up—your HP won't increase further.
Lin Quan: No more increase? And I thought the food here had a built-in healing function. What a shame it only works once.
