1. The Chinese New Year custom of 守岁 (shǒu suì) refers to the tradition of
staying up late on New Year's Eve, also known as Lunar New Year's Eve, to
welcome in the new year. This practice is believed to ward off bad luck and
bring good fortune for the coming year. Families typically gather together,
share a meal, and remain awake until midnight or later as a way of ensuring
a prosperous and auspicious year ahead. The act of staying up symbolises the
dispelling of evil spirits and the protection of one's loved ones.↩
2. Typically, in ancient china, if one were to defy an imperial decree or
order, they may face certain punishments like loss of title, execution,
their family possessions being confiscated, etc. In severe cases, not just
the individual will be punished, even their family and possibly extended
relatives (cousins that share the same surname, cousins that share
different surname, extending to third cousins.) may be punished as
well. ↩
I still feel sad no matter how many times I read that last part ( ;´
